Introduction
  • Global Studies in Education (GSE) Online is a
    web-based Master of Education in Educational
    Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at
    Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)
  • The program is designed for educators at all
    levels interested in learning and thinking more
    critically about issues of globalization and
    education, and in incorporating international
    perspectives into their curriculum and pedagogy

Context for the Program
  • Post 9/11 United States Department of Education
    mandate to set up Title VI National Area Resource
    Centers
  • Center for Global Studies at UIUC established in
    2002
  • Global Studies in Education Online Masters
    program established as primary CGS project
  • First Cohort Spring 2005
  • Sixth Cohort Fall 2008

Program Philosophy
  • The Global Studies in Education (GSE) Online
    program is based on the realization that the
    world has become inextricably interconnected as
    well as interdependent, and educators cannot
    afford to ignore this new reality
  • Educators need to extend their knowledge of the
    world and develop critical skills to understand
    the changing economic, political, and cultural
    contexts within which education takes place

Global Studies A new approach
  • GSE departs from the traditional programs in
    international and comparative education, as it
    does not so much focus on the need to understand
    educational systems around the world, but seeks
    to enable educators to examine the ways in which
    global processes are transforming most aspects of
    our daily lives
  • Equally the program recognizes that globalization
    has unequal consequences for different
    communities, and even individuals, and that it is
    therefore likely to be experienced and
    interpreted differently

Changing Role of the Educator
  • Increasingly, educators are becoming aware of the
    challenges presented by the complex, transforming
    world in which youth cultures are often ahead of
    teacher knowledge and skills, especially with
    respect to the uses of new technologies and the
    media
  • This suggests a new role for educators in helping
    their students to navigate this globalizing
    world in internationalizing their curriculum and
    pedagogy and helping their students to reflect
    and critically understand what it means to be
    globally informed, aware and compassionate human
    beings - "citizens of the world

Why Online?
  • The programs approach is based on principles of
    collaborative learning and professional
    networking
  • The possibilities of such an approach are
    enhanced by the availability of communication
    technologies
  • An online program has a greater potential for
    bringing educators from around the world together
    in ways that are not only affordable, accessible
    and flexible, but also enable cross-cultural
    dialogue and cooperation
  • GSE is based on a firm conviction that these
    educational objectives are best realized in
    settings that permit educators from different
    backgrounds to interact with each other on a
    regular basis, enabling them to share experiences
    and examine common challenges

Benefits of Online Education
  • Online education is an efficient, affordable,
    convenient, and flexible approach to learning
    that allows students to adapt coursework to their
    busy schedule, work at their own pace, and access
    study materials, university staff, and fellow
    students wherever and whenever they choose
  • Making full use of Internet technology, GSE
    coursework enables a great deal of interaction
    and collaboration with peers through e-mail,
    discussion boards, chat rooms and other emerging
    technologies
  • GSE faculty and staff engage students in frequent
    communication and provide ongoing academic and
    technical support

Online Teaching Synchronous and Asynchronous
  • Two types of online course management systems
    used for the program are Moodle and Elluminate
  • Elluminate is used for the synchronous sessions.
    All Elluminate sessions are archived
  • Moodle is used for the asynchronous portions of
    the courses

Program Requirements
  • The program requires completion of eight courses
    (32 semester hours, 4 hours per course), normally
    taken over two calendar years
  • It is designed around cohorts of students who
    begin and end the program together more or less
    at the same time
  • Each cohort is ideally made up of 25 students who
    follow the same sequence of core courses,
    followed by elective courses to enable students
    to pursue particular interests, and to
    participate in a study abroad program

  • The UIUC University Library is one of the largest
    in the United States and holds more than ten
    million volumes, and 22 million items and
    materials in all formats, languages, and subjects
  • Online students have full access to U of I
    library privileges, as well as a range of online
    research services

Other Components
  • GSE provides assistantships for PhD. students
    with research areas aligned with the Global
    Studies in Education PhD. concentration in
    Educational Policy Studies
  • These students provide research and teaching
    support for the program and courses
  • In addition they participate in a collective
    construction of resources including a blog
