Student Performance levels
  • Students are placed into Math and ELA courses
    based upon multiple measures to ensure the
    appropriate instructional delivery.
  • There are 3 levels
  • Benchmark student is capable of performing at
    grade level standards
  • Strategic student is up to 2 years below grade
    level standards and needs additional support in
    the core materials
  • Intensive student is more than 2 years below
    grade level standards and requires supplemental
    support in place of the core materials

Student Placement Needs
  • The Middle Grades Courses of Study and
    Instructional Time state framework guidelines
    were posted September 19, 2007 recommending
    instruction that is at least
  • 1 hour, and up to 2 hours, daily in ELA
  • 1 hour daily in Mathematics
  • 1 hour daily in Social Studies
  • 1 hour daily in Science with alternating labs
  • 400 minutes every 10 days for PE (required)
  • Research supports daily education in the arts for
    all students

7 period schedule with 2 Math periods Offered at
Carr, McFadden (50), Spurgeon, Willard in 2008-09
Not all students take Science and Social
Science daily (or the full year) Note For a
student to receive an elective an extended school
day was required.

  • No additional Staffing Cost for 8 Period Block
    Schedule
  • Teaching FTE is based upon enrollment
  • A school with 1340 students is allocated 40
    teachers
  • There will be an adjustment of staff based on
    subject credentials needed

distribution of credentials is now balanced to

Math is a hard-to-find area with vacancies. More
current SAUSD staff are retained in the 8-period
block

Categorical Funding
  • Sites have used Categorical funding to provide
    Interventions and additional sections outside of
    the school day to expose student to electives in
    the 7 period day
  • These funds have been reduced / eliminated by the
    State
  • Categorical funds are for at-risk students only
    and can not support most benchmark students
  • Funds must supplement the core program

Training
  • Additional teacher staff development will be
    offered to support teachers to teach in the
    extended block
  • District and Site level content experts will be
    identified to work with teachers
  • Through staff in-service time prior to the first
    day of school
  • Ongoing during Wednesday staff development days
  • The Federal Stimulus funding and State
    Categorical Funds (if received) can support
    teacher training
