  • Refineries, pulp and paper mills and chemical
    processing plants overlay carbon steel plate with
    stainless steel deposited weld metal. The overlay
    improves the corrosion resistance of the steel
    while optimizing equipment costs.
  • During welding, some of the carbon steel melts
    and dilutes into the stainless steel overlay.
    This can yield a stainless steel overlay with
    inadequate corrosion resistance.
  • To ensure that the dilution is minimal, IRISNDT
    uses PORTABLE steel chemical (SPARK) analysers to
    determine if the overlays meet composition
    specifications at the surface, 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm
    below the surfacethe degree of dilution is
    usually a function of the distance from the
    carbon steel-overlay interface.

  • The ER-316L Overlay Illustrated Did Not
    Meet the Composition Specification Throughout Its
    Thickness. The 0.5 mm Depth Nickel Content and
    the 1.0 mm Depth Chromium Content Were Below the
    Specified Minimum.
  • The Overlay Was Removed and Re-applied
    Correctly.
