Questions On Lecture 11
  • What does John want all to understand about the
    dialaogue between Jesus and Nicodemus?
  • What is the spiritual implication of the
conversation between Jesus and the Woman at the
    Well?
  • Identify the 12 disciples.

3
NICODEMUS JOHN 31FF No Jew by natural birth can
enter the kingdom of heaven. Everyone must be
born anew of the spirit.
4
John 31. Now there was a man of the Pharisees,
named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews 2. the
same came unto him by night, and said to him,
Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from
God for no one can do these signs that thou
doest, except God be with him. 3. Jesus
answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say
unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see
the kingdom of God. 4. Nicodemus saith unto
him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he
enter a second time into his mother's womb, and
be born? 5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I
say unto thee, Except one be born of water and
the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of
God! 6. That which is born of the flesh is
flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit.
5
Recording this dialogue about Nicodemus, John
wants the reader to understand clearly
  • That which is born of flesh is flesh the way
    into mans earthly family
  • That which is born of the Spirit is Spirit the
    way into Gods heavenly family
  • (To be born of the Spirit one must hear what the
spirit is saying 38 Rev. 2,3. What is the
    Spirit saying?
  • 3 THAT THESE ARE ONE IN HEAVEN
  • THE FATHER, SON HOLY SPIRIT. 1 John 57
  • (MT. 2819-20 Rom. 63-4) JN. 3-5

6
5. Spiritual (Living) Water is superior to
Jacobs Well Water of the Samaritans
  • 11. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast
nothing to draw with, and the well is deep
whence then hast thou that living water? 12.
Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave
us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his
    sons, and his cattle?
  • 13. Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one
that drinketh of this water shall thirst again
  • 14. but whosoever drinketh of the water that I
shall give him shall never thirst but the water
that I shall give him shall become in him a well
of water springing up unto eternal life.

7

    down.

14
THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT
  • A typical sermon given by Matthew of the WORD of
Salvation that will characterize the citizens in
    the New Kingdom of Heaven

15
It seems to be a composite of Jesus teachings
rather than just one sermon. It emphasizes
1.The superiority of Jesus Word over the law of
Moses. Jesus had come to fulfill the O. Test.
law. 2. The spiritual age has come 3. Those
who would make up the Kingdom of heaven. 3. One
sins first in the heart. 4. The new way of the
spirit would be difficult to travel. 5. That
wise people would hear Jesus word.
16
THE Sermon on the Mount (Mt. 520) Characteristic
s of the New Birth
  • In Matthew 5 3-12 Jesus defines those to be made
happy in the new spiritual order
  • Those poor in spirit -- ready to hear the Word
  • The mourning penitent over sins
  • The meek Having a submissive spirit to Jesus
  • Hungry/Thirsty Desire to feast upon the Word,
    the bread of life
  • Pure in heart sincere, without reservation
  • Peace makers living/teaching the gospel of
    peace
  • Suffer for righteousness Unyielding under
    affliction
  • The slandered these have fellowship with the
    faithful

17
Fundamental Lesson The Old must be removed to
make way for the New For those looking for the
New Kingdom of Heavenit will not be an add-on to
the law of Moses. It is the New Covenant of
Jesus Christ. 517-18 Think not that I am come
to destroy the law, or the prophets I am not
come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say
unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or
one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
till all be fulfilled. Col. 214. 14. Blotting
out the handwriting of ordinances that was
against us, which was contrary to us, and took it
out of the way, nailing it to his cross
18
  • The law had to be fulfilled before it could be
    removed.
  • Romans 104 Christ is the end of the law
  • Heb. 915-17. And for this cause he is the
mediator of the new testament, that by means of
death, for the redemption of the transgressions
that were under the first testament, they which
are called might receive the promise of eternal
inheritance. 16. For where a testament is, there
must also of necessity be the death of the
testator. For a testament is of force after men
are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all
    while the testator liveth.

19
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that
was against us, which was contrary to us, and
took it out of the way nailing it to his cross.
Col. 214
  • Christ fulfilled the Old Testament Law and nailed
    it to the cross.

The New Testament became the new law after Christ
died ACTS 2 THROUGH REVELATION ARE RECORDS UNDER
THE NEW TESTAMENT
Old Law was In effect before Christ Died MATTHEW,
MARK LUKE AND JOHN ARE RECORDS UNDER THE OLD
TESTAMENT SPEAKING ABOUT THE NEW TESTAMENT TIMES
Gal. 5 4. Christ is become of no effect unto
you, whosoever of you are justified by the law
ye are fallen from grace.
20
The New Authority Invested in Jesus is that which
only God Could Have.
  • MOSES LAW
  • YOU HAVE
  • HEARD IT
  • SAID

CHRIST/FAITH BUT I SAY UNTO YOU . . .
21
Jesus Defines Superior Righteousness in the
Kingdom
  • O. TEST. Externalism
  • You have heard it said
  • Mosesearthly kingdom
  • External works
  • Do not murder
  • Do not commit adultery
  • Do not swear
  • Eye for an eye
  • Love thy neighbor
  • N. Test. Internalism (spirit)
  • but I say unto you
  • Jesus/Kingdom of Heaven
  • Internal works
  • Do not hate in the heart
  • Do not lust in the heart
  • Ones Word is sufficient
  • No evil for evil
  • Love enemies (agape)

22
EXTERNAL ACT VERSUS INTERNAL THOUGHT Except your
righteous exceed that of the scribes and
Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the
kingdom of heaven. 520
  • THE OLD STANDARD THE NEW STANDARD
  • Murder is sin Angry insults are sin,
    like raca, thou fool
  • Adultery is sin Lust is premeditated adultery
  • Easy divorce Only for adultery is acceptable
  • Keep oaths to God Frivolous swearing is sin
  • Eye for an eye Resist not evil,
  • Hate your enemies Love your enemies (do good to
them) THIS IS WHAT THE FATHER DOES EACH DAY ACT
    LIKE YOUR FATHER

23
THE NEW STANDARD
  • 6 1-2 (alms) Do not brag about your good deeds
  • 65- Do not put your prayers on parade.
  • THE MODEL PRAYER
  • Hallowed be thy name
  • Thy kingdom come
  • Thy will be done on earth as in heaven
  • Give us our daily bread
  • And forgive us of our debts as we forgive our
    debtors
  • Lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil
  • For thine is the kingdom
  • (for if ye forgive notneither will you be
    forgiven)

24
The New Order
  • Mt. 616 Dont fast for public display
  • Mt. 619 Dont rely on fading riches, trust in
    the things than endure forever.
  • (FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, IS WHERE YOUR HEART
    WILL BE)
  • What catches your eye (lust after) outside is an
indicate of what is on the inside.
  • No man can serve two masters.
  • 633 SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

25
CHAPTER 7
  • 71 Do not judge (harshly-rashly). John 724
  • 77 Ask, Seek, Knock
  • 713 Enter the strait gateAvoid the broad way
  • 715 Beware of false prophets (teachers) who act
    like sheep (Christians)
  • 721 Paying alone is not enough
  • 722-23 The deceived will plead their cases at
    the judgmenthave we not
  • 724ff The wise and foolish builder.

26
Jesus emphasizes I Say. He is the new embodied
Word of Life
  • Gods Word is incarnate in Jesus. (John 11-2)
  • Total Judgment is given to Jesus (John 522)
  • Victory over Satan is by trust in the Word (Mt.
    4)
  • Children of the Kingdom hunger for the word (Mt.
    56)
  • The wise man who builds upon the Rock (Jesus) is
the person who hears and obeys the Word of Jesus
    (Matt. 724ff)

27
Jesus Emphasizes His Teaching as the Essential
Word of Life
  • He closes the sermon on the mount with
  • MT. 724. Every one therefore that heareth
these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be
likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon
    the rock
  • 25. and the rain descended, and the floods
came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that
house and if fell not for it was founded upon
    the rock.
  • 26. And every one that heareth these words of
mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a
foolish man, who built his house upon the sand
  • 27. and the rain descended, and the floods
came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that
house and it fell and great was the fall
    thereof.

28
Now We Will See The Power Behind the WORD of
Jesus Demonstrated. This will substantiate what
John the Baptist said about Him is true and it
will serve to confirm that His Teaching is from
God
29
The S.M. being concluded, Matthew now
demonstrates the universality of the K. H.
  • First, A Jewish leper is healed by faith in Jesus
    WORD. (83)
  • Second, A Gentile is healed (v. 13), but by
    display of a greater faith
  • 1) Jesus physical presence is not needed for
your power to be effective. Why great? Jesus
    death!
  • Faith in the word is available to all (Jn. 316
    Gal. 328-29)

30
In His New Kingdom, the Healing Word of Jesus is
for the entire World
  • Matthew 8.
  • The Power of Will Heal the Jews
  • Jesus Word
  • Makes one Will Heal the Gentiles
  • Whole
  • 28 19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost

31
NOW Matthew proceeds to define the authority of
Jesus by showing what it means and how broad it
is. He will illustrate this by a Gentile
Centurion.
32
  • Mt. 88. The centurion answered and said, Lord,
I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my
roof but speak the word only, and my servant
    shall be healed.
  • 9. For I am a man under authority, having
soldiers under me and I say to this man, Go, and
he goeth and to another, Come, and he cometh
and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
  • 10. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said
to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I
have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
  • 11. And I say unto you, That many shall come
from the east and west, and shall sit down with
Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of
    heaven.
  • 12. But the children of the kingdom shall be
cast out into outer darkness there shall be
    weeping and gnashing of teeth.

33
Total Authority is Illustrated in these three
commanding words
  • GO, COME, DO!
  • Matthew now reveals and demonstrates Jesus total
    commanding authority
  • He commands the evil spirits to GO! (832)
  • He Commands the sinner to Come (1429 1128)
  • He commands the Disciple to DO
  • Matt. 1250. For whosoever shall do the will of
my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and
sister, and mother. (Mt. 721 Acts 238)

34
Ch. 8 Jesus Unlimited Power and Authority
  • Mt. 814-27
  • Power over disease. (Heals Peters mother-in-law
    814)
  • Power over natural realm (Calms the sea
    823-27)
  • Power over spiritual realm (828-34 Swap pigs
    for mercy)
  • Jesus is Omnipotent God.

35
An example of what lies ahead As Great and
beneficial as Jesus Authority is, some will
reject His mercy for the local economy. (Stock
market)
  • Matt. 828-34..
  • The healing word is carried to a Gergasene
village plagued by two pitiful and loathsome
    demoniacs.
  • They rejected Jesus and His merciful healing
  • For their economy of pigsThey chose pigs over
    mercy.
  • Observe their souls were in a darker condition
than the demoniacs. They recognized his divine
    power and who he was.
  • This is what the world will choose over the
    healing power of Jesus.

36
MATTHEW, CHAPTER 9. Since Jesus has divine
authority to command obedience in all realms of
existence, Matthew now goes a step further to
reveal the true identity of Jesus. He not only
heals on the Sabbath Day, showing authority over
the Sabbath, but also authorizes the forgiveness
of the mans sins
37
Thus we have 4 steps leading to the Identity of
Jesus in chs. 8 and 9
  • Jesus is the
    Son of God
  • Word Gives
    sight to the blind
  • Word of authority over
  • sickness of soul
    (sin)
  • Word of authority over
    sickness
  • of body
  • Word of Authority over natural forces

4
THAT I AM HE THAT YE MAY BELIEVE.

38
What the conclusion should be Since Jesus had
these divine powers from God, he also had, by the
virtue of that power, the right to forgive sins
----- But the unbelieving Jews refuse to accept
this and bring trivial charges against him
39
Mt. 96 Jesus Authority to forgive sins Gives
Rise to Open Opposition
  • But why oppose forgiving sins in face of the
    great miracles he has performed?
  • 91-8 1st charge of blasphemy for forgiving
    sins.
  • 911 2nd charge Jesus eats with taxpayers and
    sinners.
  • 914 3rd charge Jesus and his disciples do not
    fast.
  • 122 4th charge Jesus and disciples pluck grain
    to eat on the Sabbath
  • 1210, 22 5th chargeJesus heals on the Sabbath
  • 1224 6th charge Jews accuse Jesus of performing
miracles of mercy in the name of Beelzebub.

40
MATTHEW 10
  • Following these mighty signs Jesus sends the
disciples on a limited preaching commission and
calls for a confession of faith in His identity

41
Chapter 10 32-33 32. Whosoever therefore shall
confess me before men, him will I confess also
before my Father which is in heaven. 33. But
whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I
also deny before my Father which is in
heaven. He lays down stringent rules for
discipleship.. Reject your cross and you will be
rejectedTHE RESULT WAS NOT REPENTANCE BUT
HARDNESS Where does the reader stand? With
the Jews or disciples?
42
Where the problem really lies It is a Moral
issue that Keeps One from Seeing the Obvious Truth
  • John 717. If any man will do his will, he shall
know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or
    whether I speak of myself.
  • WHERE IS THE HEARTS DESIRE?

43
Matt. 11 John Needs Reassurance
  • Now when John had heard in the prison the works
of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
  • 3. And said unto him, Art thou he that should
come, or do we look for another?
  • 4. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and
shew John again those things which ye do hear and
    see
  • 5. The blind receive their sight, and the lame
walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear,
the dead are raised up, and the poor have the
    gospel preached to them.
  • 6. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be
    offended (become impatient) in me.
