SAFETY GRAM SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS SNOW AND ICE

• WINTER CONDITIONS INCREASE THE RISK OF FALLS ON
  SNOW AND ICE. REDUCED VISIBILITY CONDITIONS AND
  DIMLY LIT PARKING LOTS MAKE ICE COVERED AREAS
  DIFFICULT TO SEE. THIS SAFETY GRAM PROVIDES WAYS
  TO ELIMINATE OR REDUCE THE PROBABILITY OF FALLS
  ON SNOW AND ICE.
• SNOW and ICE REMOVAL BUILDING MANAGERS
• Remove snow and ice from steps, walks, landings
  and similar areas directly adjacent to the
  building/facility not accessible to power-driven
  snow removal equipment.
• Chemicals will only be used on ice or frozen
  snow. Loose snow will be removed by sweeping
  and/or shoveling.
• Immediate clean-up of residue is required to
  prevent tracking deicing chemicals into
  buildings/facilities.
• SAFE PRACTICES
• First, snow and ice must be recognized as a
  workplace hazard (the workplace does include
  parking lots, sidewalks and steps).
• The best countermeasure is to eliminate the
  hazard (remove the snow and ice).
• Personnel removing snow and ice must dress
  appropriately (rubber tread shoes or overshoes
  will provide the best traction/stability and
  reduce the probability of falls).
• WALKING ON SNOW AND ICE
• Footwear with rubber treads or rubber tread
  overshoes will provide the best traction and
  stability.
• Walk only on cleared sidewalks if possible.
• If sidewalks are snow or ice covered, walk
  along the grassy edges for better traction.
