- Introduction
- Bony grafts play a major role in surgical
treatment of foot deformity in children, as they
sustain the correction obtained by surgery,
initially, by means of mechanical methods but
after incorporation and reconstruction, by
generating a biological bone block. - The Aim
- Comparison of the dynamics of bone autograft
versus allograft incorporation after foot
deformities surgery using mathematical parameters
(SoftwareMathcad) - Material and Methods
- The retrospective study covered 133 flat-feet
flexible in 88 children, treated surgically using
the Grice method. Out of the 133 feet, 87 (65)
were operated on using autografts (AUTO) and 46
(35) using allografts (ALLO). The autografts
were taken from the proximal part of the tibia.
The feet were assessed on the basis of
radiographs. The first examination was conducted
4 months after surgery. The feet were divided
into two groups Group A follow up time of
less than 2 years and Group B over 3 years.
The X-rays were transformed into digits (BMP
format with 256 gray levels) with the help of
scanner. - The histogram of intensity was defined as the
ratio of pixels with a given grayness level to
the number of all pixels. The function of
histogram and the values of MEAN (M), ENERGY (EN)
and ENTROPY (ET) describing histogram features
were defined. - The area of the graft was examined and histogram
and its parameters EN, ET were computed. Norm was
taken from 3 control areas, established in 133
feet, were computed as average histogram and EN,
ET. The statistical analysis was performed based
on t-Student test at a significance level of
p0,05 - Results
- A gradual overlapping was observed over time of
particular charts for both AUTO and ALLO.
Significant differences were noted in Mean, EN
and ET when comparing the results of Group A. A
comparison of results for Group B didnt show
any significant differences in Mean, EN, ET. The
bone structure within both allografts and
autogratfs was reconstructed after 3 years.
However, no other material differences were
recognized between the final results of autograft
and allograft reconstruction. Within Group A,
some differences were noted, indicating
incomplete graft incorporation. The trust level
(p) is however close to the threshold value,
implying that almost full bone reconstruction
took place between the 2nd and 3rd year after
surgery
