    Nursing, History, Social Science, Medicine, and
    other academic journals, both abstracts and full
    text
  • ATLA Religion Database with Serials Religion,
    Christianity, Bible journals ATLA (American
    Theological Association) journals are full-text
  • Business Source Elite Business journals, both
    abstracts and full text. Includes DOW information
    on 5000 companies
  • CINAHL Nursing journals with abstract links to
    full text material in Academic Search Premier
  • ERIC similar to askERIC. Abstracts of education
    journal articles and ERIC documents. Links to
    full text in Academic Search Premier. Links to
    our ERIC (from on-campus only) document
    subscription (EDRS)

  • MAS Ultra School Edition provides full text
    for 550 publications on popular general interest
    and current events including pamphlets, full text
    reference books, biographies, primary source
    documents, and an image collection of flags, maps
    and photo
  • Primary Search provides full text for 60
    magazines for elementary school research
    including reading level indicators
  • Funk Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia entries
    over a variety of subjects
  • EBSCO Animals provides information on a variety
    of topics relating to animals
  • Searchasaurus K through 6th grade, offers full
    text articles, general and animal encyclopedias

  • Selecting Databases
  • Check the Box before the database you choose
  • to search
  • Or select multiple databases
  • by checking the boxes before
  • each database
  • Hit the Continue button
  • Academic Search Premier and
  • Business Source Elite databases containing full
    text articles, are default databases

  • Use EBSCO HOST Menu bar
  • SEARCH TABS
  • Basic (default) enter search terms using
    connecting Boolean operators such as And Or
  • Advanced searches for a specific article title
    or author or journal name
  • Databases switch/change or add databases to
    your search
  • NOTE Limiters will be different for each
    database you are searching

  • New Search click on link to return to default
    Search screen
  • View Folder click on link to view results
    placed in the Folder
  • Preferences click on link to change the format
    and sorting of your Results List
  • Help click on Help to open help screens
  • Sub-Toolbar Tabs
  • Key word (default)
  • Subject Terms alphabetical list of subjects
  • Publications use this to find out if EBSCO has
    a journal within its databases
  • Indexes allows searching by indexed fields
  • Library Holdings use to find out if GCU owns a
    journal indexed in EBSCO
  • References searches the references of an article

  • Language Feature
  • To perform searches in another language, use the
    pull down menu and choose your language (10
    selections listed)
  • Search screen automatically changes to the
    selected language
  • If performing search in Spanish, result
    titles/citations, PDF, HTML and full text are
    given in Spanish
  • OR Perform search in English and
  • View/change HTML results to Spanish, French, or
    German by using pull down menu
  • Hit Translate button to change to language
    selection and view article in chosen language

  • Creating Your Account
  • Signing-In you do not need to create an account
    to use EBSCO. An account advantage is the ability
    to save items into your account folder, remaining
    in your folder for one year or until you delete
    the items. If you opt not to sign-in before
    searching, items added to folders during the
    search process are deleted when you close EBSCO
    HOST.
  • Click on Sign into MY EBSCO Host
  • Click on Im a New User
  • Fill in all the boxes
  • Write down your user name and password as GCU
    does not keep lists of EBSCO Host user
    names/passwords
  • Hit the Submit button
  • Return to the Basic Search screen
  • To retrieve a forgotten user name or password
  • From Login screen, click on I forgot
  • Enter first and last name and email address,
    click Continue
  • Reset screen prompts you to answer password hint
    question and enter a new password twice, click
    Continue
  • Automatically logged in using your new password
    be sure to write it down

  • Enter your search terms in Find Box
  • Search for phrases using quotation marks around
    the phrase
  • children and dogs
  • Select Limiters
  • Do check the full text box
  • If you do limit to full text, you will not
  • see results listing journal titles/article
  • that are in a paper or microfiche format
  • If using ERIC database, limit your search to 1996
    and later
  • Documents found using this limiter may be
  • full text at EDRS (ERIC Document
  • Reproduction Service.)

  • this to define your search for better results
    limiters are different for each database
  • Limits the search narrows the results
  • Full Text returns only items you can view/print
    the entire article
  • Peer-Reviewed limits results to peer-reviewed
    articles, experts in field
  • Dates limits to a range of dates
  • Publication limits to a particular journal
    title
  • GCU holdings limits to journals indexed in
    EBSCO but the library owns in other formats
  • Expands the search broadens the results
  • Searches the entire text of an article
  • Includes all search terms in searching
  • Includes all related words in searching

  • Peer Reviewed
  • Clicking on Peer-reviewed under LIMITERS asks to
    search scholarly journals only
  • Peer-reviewed journals are publications that
    include only those articles that have been
    reviewed and/or qualified by a selected panel of
    acknowledged experts in the field of study
    covered by the journal
  • CINAHL and Religion Philosophy along with
    Academic Search Premier all have Scholarly
    (Peer-Reviewed) boxes to select
  • PsycARTICLES and ATLA Religion are all peer
    reviewed articles but do not have specific
    limiter box to check

  • Accepts Boolean operators AND OR NOT
  • Tax and reforms finds results using both search
    terms
  • Tax or reforms finds results using either search
    term, not necessarily together
  • Tax not reforms finds results with search term
    tax but not reforms
  • Allows truncation () and wildcards (?) use
    either symbol when searching
  • for multiple spellings
  • for various word endings (comput finds computer,
    computing) or
  • for unknown characters (ne?t finds results
    containing neat, nest, next)
  • Allows phrase searches in quotes
  • Allows searching by proximity finding two or
    more words that appear a specific number of words
    apart in the article
  • Near Operator N - (tax N5 reform finds results
    matching tax reform as well as reform of the tax
    code)
  • Within Operator W - (tax W8 reform finds tax
    reform but would not match reform of the tax
    code)

  • Articles with EJ Numbers
  • Click on Linked full text, HTML full text, or Pdf
    full text to view entire article
  • Local Journals with EJ Numbers
  • This journal is held in Fleming Library means it
    is in a paper or microfiche format Or, This
    journal is not held in Fleming Library means we
    do not own this journal
  • ERIC Documents with ED Numbers
  • Full Text from EDRS only works if you are using a
    campus computer
  • Off-campus
  • Write down the ED number
  • Open up the ERIC Document Reproduction Service
    database
  • Enter the ED numbers using Express Search

  • Adding to Folder
  • To add an item to your folder, click the folder
    icon on the far right
  • When you are finished adding items, the folder
    will say folder has items
  • Click on this folder to view items that were
    added to folder
  • If the search yielded too many or too few
    results, click on the Refine Search tab
  • NOTE for additional help, click on the Help
    link

  • Emailing Citations/Articles
  • Click Email
  • In Email Manager, enter email address using a
    semicolon between each email address
  • Enter subject in Subject Line
  • Click Remove these items from folder after email
    appears
  • Select what to include brief citation, brief
    citation and abstract, detailed citation and
    abstract, HTML full text, or Pdf as separate
    attachment
  • Persistent Links are automatically included in
    the email
  • Click Send button
  • Emailing Linked Full Text follow links directly
    to full text article (to include HTML and Pdf
    links) and then email article

  • Save Manager
  • From article or citation or from the folder list,
    click Save to Disk
  • The Save Manager appears
  • Select format for the results to save
  • Hit Save button
  • Next screen says one article will be saved
  • Continue by selecting File in your browsers menu
    bar, then SAVE AS
  • a plain text file (.txt) or as A HTML file
    (.html)
  • Click the Bibliographic Manager tab
  • To include all fields in a citation, select Save
    citations in a format that can be uploaded to
    bibliographic management software
  • If saving from within the folder, click Remove
    these items from folder after saving option
  • Hit Save button

  • Advanced Search
  • Select CINAHL and Academic Search Premier (to
    pull up any full texts)
  • Enter Search Terms in Find box(es)
  • Click on Field Codes (in drop down box) for a
    list of codes to use
  • (AU author) or
  • Click on Search Tips for help on using the
    Advanced Search mode
  • Use Boolean Operators
  • AND finds both terms
  • OR finds either term
  • NOT excludes terms so results do not contain
    those specified terms
  • Add Limiters or Expanders
  • if needed
  • Click Search button
