Title: Marc Chagall 18871985

1
Marc Chagall 1887-1985
  • Painter of memories and dreams

2
Marc Chagall was born as one of eight children.
His family lived in Vitebsk, Russia.
3
  • People who lived in Vitebsk were very poor and
had hard lives. The happiest times were during
    celebrations like weddings and religious
holidays. In many of Marcs paintings, people
who are happy are shown floating in the air, free
    from their problems.

23
The Dance and the Circus
  • Marc often made paintings of animals doing things
that people do. This seemed normal to Marc
because he grew up listening to Russian folk
    stories and fairy tales.

24
  • Marc Chagall had seven sisters and one brother.
His father was a fish seller and his mother owned
    a small grocery store.

Influenced by Picasso and Matisse in Paris
  • Chagall moved to Paris to study painting full
    time.
  • In Paris - at that time the Mecca of art -
Chagall experienced Fauvism (Matisse) and Cubism
(Picasso). Chagall kept doing the art he loved.

27
  • Chagall and his artist friends were so poor in
Paris that they could not afford canvases. They
often had to paint on tablecloths or bed sheets.
In The Violinist, you can even see the pattern of
    the tablecloth Marc painted on!
