• In the laboratory, easiest place to get hired,

Draw Sites

• Finger sticks
• Median cubital vein (anticubital)
• Infants-heel stick
• Hand
• Any other sites, especially from the feet, should
  not be drawn without a physicians order
• Note never draw above an IV site

• There are MANY different tubes that are used to
  collect blood. Each has a different additive
  (anticoagulant) and is used for specific tests.
  They are NOT interchangable.

• USES Chemistries, Immunology and Serology, Blood
  Bank (Crossmatch)
• MODE OF ACTIONBlood clots, and the serum is
  separated by centrifugation

• USES Hematology (CBC) and Blood Bank

• MODE OF ACTION Forms calcium salts to remove
  calcium
• requires full draw - invert 8 times to prevent
  clotting and platelet clumping

• USES Chemistries
• ADDITIVEPlasma Separating Tube (PST) with
  Lithium heparin
• MODE OF ACTION Anticoagulates with lithium
  heparin Plasma is separated with PST gel at the
  bottom of the tube

• USES Coagulation tests full draw required
