Title: LCA of herring a case study Nordic Network on LCA of Fish Roskilde 1819 November 2002
1LCA of herring - a case studyNordic Network on
LCA of FishRoskilde 18-19 November 2002
- Per Christensen
- Aalborg Universitet
2Steps in the herring case
- 1997 First assesment. Based on EDIP. Used
Excell for calculations. 3 effect-categories - 2000 Other assessment. Other fishproducts -
mackerel and mussels. Based on EDIP but using
SimaPro. All effect categories - 2002 Second assessment on Herring. Plaice and
cod.
3Functional unit
- Glass of pickled herring on 580 gr net weight
- Herring is 205 gr.
- Marinade is 354 ml.
- The rest is onions and spices
4Allocation
- Traditional technical and economical allo-cation
is used (so far) - Offal for production of fishmeal
- Cogeneration of heat and electricity
- System-expansion is used for some new cases in
order to see how it works out
5The first LCA on herring
The environmental effects from the life cycle of
a glass of pickled herring when fishing with
trawl or seine
6Hot spots in the lifecycle
- Environmental regulation has focussed on the
emission (of waste water) from fish processing
industries - Often vi find hot-spots other places in the
lifecycle (fishing - energy usage - sugar) - also
because water savings and cleaner technologies
have been implemented in the industries
7Normalised effectpotentials when using seine
8Normalised effectpotentials when using trawl
9New hot spots in the lifecycle
- Anti-fouling paints are very important (TBT,
copper). Underlines the importance of fishing - Production (melting) of recycled glass (oil and
benzene)
10Fuel consumption for species / species groups in
the Danish fishery in 2000
11Fuel consumption per kg caught fish for different
fishing gears in year 2000. Allocation is avoided
by system expansion
12Estimated consumption of anti fouling agents for
different species / species groups in the Danish
fishery in 2000
13Problems facing us !
- Environmental effects - toxicity - from chemicals
hijacks the conclusions - Avoiding allocation ?
- Many problems using databases and software. The
validation is not good enough!
