He grew up in an affluent relatives home with
his two sisters and a reclusive mother, who spent
several years in a single room.

Hawthorne graduated from Bowdoin College in 1825,
returned to Salem, and lived in isolation in a
dismal third-floor chamber beneath the eaves for
twelve years. He came out only at night.
