• Born March 6th 1475

• Considered himself a Son of Florence.

• Mother was unable to breast feed
• Sent to a wet nurse in a family of stone cutters
• Sucked in the craft of hammer and chisel with my
  foster mothers milk

• One of friends encouraged pursuit of art with

• Very controversial painting
• Someone painted clothing on the nudes after the

• Christian- the final judgment is a huge Christian
  belief

Tomb Of Julius II

• Originally supposed to consist of 40 sculptures
• Actual tomb when finished contained a magnificent
  sculpture of Moses holding the Ten Commandments
• Statue of the Bound Slave, Dying Slave and a
  Third Captive
• He made these because he saw the statues
  imprisoned within the stone

Architecture

• Michelangelo became interested in architecture
  following the Sistine Chapel
• Laurentian Library- his first major architectural
  adventure
• Designed the Campidoglio- preserved traditional
  Roman monumentality

• Would not accept pay for this structure
• Saw it as Gods task for him

• Devotion to architecture furthered his status as

Michelangelo and the Army

• 1529- Michelangelo put in charge of part of
  Florences armed forces
• Brilliantly protected San Miniato by covering the
  church in mattresses
• Fearing that Florentine forces would lose, he
  fled to Venice
• Exiled as a traitor for this
• When the Medici returned to Florence this exile
  was lifted.

• After painting Sistine Chapel, influenced Raphael
  to change technique
• He was able to combine the grandeur of classical
  art with the spirituality of the modern Christian
  era
• His painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling
  included unconventional plethora of characters.
