Most of us do not like to spend much time
thinking of Hell. We would rather focus on things
more pleasant and more real to us in our daily
lives. Why would anyone want to dwell on the
subject of torment and separation from God
anyway? Our purpose tonight is to gain an
understanding of what Hell is and what the Bible
has to say about this place of punishment. Also,
we will gain an understanding of the different
places that make up what we know of as Hell.
3
1 God can not tolerate the presence of evil
(sin) in His midst.
Just think about it after you read this Romans
323 If God let sin enter into Heaven, it would
no longer be Heaven.

1 God can not tolerate the presence of evil
(sin) in His midst.
2 Justice demands right to be rewarded and wrong
to be punished.

Right Rewarded Wrong Punished
  • Matthew 2531-34, 41,46
  • When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all
the holy angels with Him, then will He sit on the
throne of His glory. All the nations will be
gathered before Him and He will separate them one
from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from
his goats. And He will set the sheep on His right
hand, but the goats to His left. The the King
will say to those on His right hand, Come, you
blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom
prepared for you from the foundation of the
WorldThen He will say to those on His left
hand, Depart from me you cursed into the
everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his
angels and these will go away into everlasting
punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Determination of Saved vs. Lost souls By those
whos names appear in the Lambs Book of
Life. Just Rewards paid out by an entirely
impartial judge. There is no appeal process.

3 In order to be free, mankind must have a
choice.
8
Freedom of Choice
  • Our freedom as humans is marked by the ability we
posses to make decisions in light of our
    consciousness, inclinations, educations and
thoughts. We are Free Agents! We exercise our
freedom to appease our wills with full
responsibility for our decisions no one else
answers for our choice. We are rewarded or
punished based solely on OUR CHOICES! Otherwise,
we are not really free now are we? So, unlike an
American court of justice where responsibility
can be shifted to another or altogether excused
away, Gods court, with Jesus as the Judge, will
be simple and direct. Guilty or Redeemed. Its
our decision. Its His word that will be final.

Plain Fact 1
Hell will not go away if you ignore it. Hell is
a reality even if you do not like to think about
it.
Just because you do not believe in it doesn't
mean its not there.
Plain Fact 2
Hell is fair Heaven is not

Theres more to Hell than you may think
The Bible speaks of a number of different places
which we have come to refer to as Hell. This is
bad. Its bad because its not accurate. Tonight
we will look at a whole bunch of places you may
never have heard of before. Dont freak out
though, your parents may not have heard of this
stuff either. Our goal will be to see more
clearly what the Bible warns us of and why its
so awful.
12
Psalms 886 Ezekiel 2620 Amos 92 Job 1021
Proverbs 1511
The Hebrew word for the place of the dead.
Frequently transliterated as Hell in the Bible.
Occurs 65 times in the O.T. The word Sheol
would have carried a connotation of a place of no
return or a place of existence after life on
Earth. Hebrew thought was that Sheol was in the
depths of the Earth. Sheol was only once ever
referenced as a place for unrighteous Dead (in
Job 3023). It is actually referred to as the
abode of both wicked and righteous dead. Never
the less, a clear shadow falls over this place.
Death represents a finality and an end to human
freedom to follow God or reject Him.
13
Luke 1619-31 Matthew 1123 Acts 225-31
Revelation 11, 68, 2013-14
The Greek word closest to Sheol
The place of the dead. Actually the namesake of
the Greek god of the lower regions (pits, caves,
graves, and caverns) Literally means not to be
seen in Greek. Found 10 times in the New
Testament.
14
Matt 1342,50, 2541 2Kings 2310 Jeremiah
191-13 Luke 125
The place of fire and torment
Occurs 12 times in the New Testament and is
always in reference to the tormented existence
of the unrighteous dead. In the Old Testament,
Gehenna referred exclusively to the temporary
abode of the wicked dead. The valley where
children were sacrificed (by burning them alive)
to Molech, the Canaanite god. See 2 Kings 216,
2 Chronicles 336 This geographical and
historical reality was one of horrors for the
Hebrews. In later years, and certainly by
Jesus ministry, Gehenna was where the garbage
and excrement of Jerusalem was burned. A place
where the maggots were ever-present and the
fires never went out. See Mark 942-48 and Isaiah
6624
15
The Valley of Gehenna
outside of the Gennath Gate in modern Jerusalem.
16
The Greek mythological place for the torment of
evil souls.
2 Peter 24 is its only literal or specific
mention in the Bible. Basically the same place
as Gehenna, but stronger usage by Peter.
Suggests that it refers to the final place of
punishment for all evil since it was where God
cast fallen angels. Basically used as an example
of colloquial cultural parallel so Greek folks
could have a basis of comparison.
17
The fictitious place or state where a person
awaits redemption.
In theory, they could cross the Sheol gulf from
Gehenna to Paradise.
A Catholic Doctrine propagated for 2 primary
reasons. (in Shannons opinion anyway) 1 By
having priests beseech the saints to intervene
on behalf of the deceased, people were able to
redeem a lost person, loved one perhaps, who had
died without last rights or Extreme Unction as
its called. Nice to believe since its never to
late 2 Financial Purposes. Since parishioners
were obliged to pay for the services of the
church fathers, tremendous sums of money could
insure their concentrated prayers for the dead
one.
18
The State of Punishment for the UnGodly
Matthew 713 is the best reference to perdition
as a place of Ruin awaiting those who choose to
not walk Gods way. A son of perdition, Judas
for instance, is one who is condemned to a
future of damnation and Hell. We find this
phraseology in both Johns gospel 1712, and
Pauls second epistle to Thessalonica, 23. OT
references like Deuteronomy 2224 and 2820
identify this As a state for the living
disobedient whom God is punishing.
19
Lake of Fire and Brimstone Lake of Burning
Sulfur Eternal Fire Unquenchable Fire HELL
Primarily, these refer to the final abode of evil
as in Revelation 21 and is The Second Death, is
the final state of eternal torment, is forever,
is total separation from God.
20
Lets Reason Together
We must do all we can to lead our friends to
Jesus so that they do not have to endure this
awful thing. Jesus came to be our way to Heaven
and life more abundant. No one needs to suffer
Hell. John 316 Please let tonights subject
matter be a reminder of the importance of the
church to obediently spread the Gospel to every
place we can reach. Hell is fair, bet we have
the gift of Life in Christ? Romans 323
