General Information
  • This course will concentrate on the rules and
skills necessary to judge on the national level.
  • There are additional areas of the code that
judges studying for international courses should
also focus on during their preparation

8
General InformationAdditional areas of concern
  • Ch 1 - Purpose / Goal of the Code of Points
  • Ch 2 - Regulations Gymnasts, Coaches, Judges
  • Ch 3 - The Organization of the Apparatus Jury
  • Ch 13 - Additional Explanations Interpretations

9
General InformationPhilosophy of the rules
  • Article 20 Instructions for the Gymnast
  • 1. The gymnast must include in his exercise only
elements that he can perform with complete safety
and with a high degree of aesthetic and technical
mastery. The responsibility for his safety rests
entirely with him. The B-Jury is required to
deduct very rigorously for any aesthetic and
    technical errors.

10
General InformationPhilosophy of the rules
  • Article 20 Instructions for the Gymnast
  • The gymnast must never attempt to increase the
difficulty or the Start Value at the expense of

  • cross the body of the horse.
  • land cross stand facing on long axis of the horse
  • must land adjacent to the last hand support.
  • Dismounts through a HS must
  • pass over the body of the horse or

  • turn 360º if begun in cross support.
  • Unless otherwise indicated
  • Multiple skills to a HS dismt. does not increase
    dismt. value.
  • Only the last element becomes part of the

  • For ex, a 2 DSB to HS is DSB DSB to HS

98
Pommel Horse Where do Skills End ?
  • Each element is defined as occurring within one
    structure group
  • A hop element ends at the completion of the hop
    or series of hops.
  • Circle / Flair element ends when it changes to
    the other.
  • Spindles end when the spindle action stops.
  • Front support (wendeswing) ends when wende action
    ends.
  • Cross Travels end when the travel action or cross
support is interrupted by a circle or other
    action.

99
Pommel HorseFlops - I
  • All Flops start from front support. Flops are
    Group IV.
  • Flops are sequences of Stocklis (S) Pommel
Loops (L) which can be combined to create skills
    of D or higher value.
  • A gymnast can do either stocklis or pommel loops
in a flop sequence, but cannot perform 3
consecutive stocklis or 3 consecutive pommel
    loops.

100
Pommel HorseFlops II
  • You must do at least 3 flops to get credit for
    combined skills
  • Only 1 flop sequence (DSB Pommel loops) is
    allowed
  • 3 flops on the pommel D, flaired E
  • 4 flops on the pommel E, flaired F

101
Pommel Horse Flops III
  • Pommel loops and/or Stockli A or B may be
combined with Russian wende swings (can be D, E
    or F).
  • The flops can precede or follow the Russian wende
swings, but if there are two flops they must
appear together. The flops can appear as 2
circles, 2 DSB, or 1 circle and 1 DSB.
  • SSLL-SSR36 EE
  • Only one of these combined sequences may be used
    for value.

102
Pommel Horse Flops IV
  • To perform the two types of combined elements one
after the other the gymnast may not show the same
    element 3x in succession.
  • Step Up ¼ turn direct Stockli B
  • DSB finishes in side support frontways on one
    pommel
  • No other double elements credited for value. Ex
    DSBDSB 1DSB non-rec.

103
Pommel Horse FlopsRussians
104
Pommel Horse Flops Review
  • A gymnast can do only 1 sequence of flops and 1
combined sequence of flops and Russians in a
    single routine.
  • To perform both consecutively, you cannot do an
    element 3x in a row.
  • Flops can only fulfill the group IV requirement
  • No other combined elements for value.

105
Pommel Horse Flops V Stockli Rules
  • Stocklis are always counted from front support to
    front support.
  • A skill is a Stockli if it includes a 1/2 turn
from front support to front support.
  • The exception to this is for a longitudinal
travel to the pommel finishing with a 1/4 turn to
front support. This is also a Stockli.

106
Pommel Horse Flops VIPommel Loop Rules
  • Pommel loops All start from front support
  • Three possibilities
  • Front sup sidew 1/4 t. PL - Front sup crossw
  • Front sup crossw PL to 1/4 t. - Front sup sidew
  • Front sup crossw PL - Front sup crossw

107
Pommel Horse Flops VII Combining Flops
  • It is impossible to do a single pommel loop
    between 2 stocklis.
  • In order to successfully complete 2 pommel loops
between 2 stocklis (SLLS) the 2 pommel loops each
    include a 1/4 turn (S - 1/4t. Loop Loop 1/4t. -
    S)

108
Pommel Horse Counting Hand Placements
  • Because all circle skills start from front
    support
  • Leg cut fwd to rear support to pick up circles
will need 4 hand placements after the leg passes
fwd in order to complete 1 full circle for an A
    skill.
  • Leg cut bwd to front support and pick up into
circles will take only 3 hand placements to earn
    one A circle.

Pommel HorseClarifications FIGHandstand
Dismounts
  • A dismount which starts and ends at the same part
of the horse must cross the horse (pass over the
body of the horse). It can be executed with or
    without turns.
  • A dismount which starts on one end, followed by a
travel, can be finished on the same side of the
body of the horse, in side position, face outside
(without passing over the body of the horse).
  • Also for a dismount which includes full travel,
and full turn, it is not necessary to pass over
    the body of the horse.

Rings Connection Bonus
  • For ascending strength to strength only
  • D D or D E 0.1
  • E E or E F 0.2
  • Without a large error

119
RingsGeneral Principles - II
  • The coach is not permitted to give the gymnast an
    initial swing.
  • Layaways, back swings in support not to value
part are deducted by the B-Jury (medium).
  • Hold positions must be reached directly, with
straight arms, w/o need or postural corrections.
    All holds minimum 2 sec.
  • Swing, Strength, hold approximately equal.
  • A false grip (overgrip) on strength parts is a
    deduction (-0.1) (B-Jury).

120
Rings Swing to Strength
  • During all swing to strength hold elements, the
shoulders may not rise above the level of the
    final hold position.
  • Any deviation will result in the normal
deductions by the B-jury and, may lead to
non-recognition by the A-jury or to recognition
    as two elements.

121

123
RingsGeneral Principles - III
  • Presses are recognized only if the beginning
strength or hold part was recognized and the end
position is held at least 1 sec.
  • Straight arms must be used whenever the nature of
    the element permits them.
  • (If the arm bend is greater than 45, then the
felge to handstand is not recognized.)

124
RingsGeneral Principles - IV
  • Example of Deductions
  • Felge to inverted cross

  • Lowers to inv. cross 10 above horiz.
  • Deduct 0.5 entry too high,
  • Deduct 0.1 for position on the hold.

125
RingsGeneral Principles - V
  • Everything is a Planche unless it is a Maltese!
  • A Maltese is recognized as such when the
shoulders and hips are at the level of the rings.
Anything higher is recognized as a planche.
  • The correct arm position on a Maltese is with the
hands flat to the ground. If the hands are turned
in, there is a deduction. If the body is resting
on the arms, there is non recognition.

  • A landing that is not prepared is a sign of an
error in technique and will usually result in a
technical execution deduction as well as a
    landing deduction.

138
Vaulting FIGMarking the mats
  • The taped lines marking the landing zone must be

  • Code of Points p. 107 Gr. II Element 14 Roll
bwd. to handstand with straight arms on 2 bars or
on 1 bar are counted as same elements.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, all elements in the
Code of Points with a straddle-cut executed to
upper-arm position or to bent-arm support will be
counted 1 letter lower than the same element to
    support-position
  • For Saltos the rule is different, see the
indicated elements value in the Code of Points
    difficulty tables

Horizontal BarElement Groups
  • I. Long hang swings
  • II. Flight elements
  • III. In bar
  • IV. El-grip
  • V. Dismounts

167
Horizontal BarGeneral Principles
  • Elements fulfill the element group requirement
for only those groups that the element is listed
in. e.g. Elgrip endo is listed in 4, not 3.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, hop elements have the
same value as analogous elements performed
without a hop, but different boxes.

168
Horizontal Bar General Execution I
  • Most skills from Groups I, III, and IV,
especially w. hops / pirouettes on top must be
completed in a nominal handstand (15 of HS).
  • Skills that re-grasp in double el-grip or flying
hop elements (Quast, etc.) are not included in
    this provision.

169
Horizontal Bar General Execution II
  • Flight elements must demonstrate a conspicuous
rise of the body above the bar.

170
Horizontal Bar casts, layaways
  • Back swings in support (casts) that reverse
direction ( w/o a value) and swing back down in
or to a lower hang position are deducted 0.3.
  • Specific examples of such layaways are
  • following a kip
  • cast and layaway to giant swing
  • cast in overgrip - straddle in to Stalder
  • cast in overgrip to free hip circle
  • following a backward swing in hang
  • hop to overgrip swing forward

171
Horizontal Bar - Connections
  • Skills retain values but earn connection as
    follows
  • FIG-TC used IN-Bar and ON-Bar interchangeably.
  • Connections may be done as shown or vice versa.

172
Horizontal BarDifficulty Guidelines - I
  • Same value box if the skill is performed
  • From handstand, back swing, or other position.
  • With the "wrong grip" or atypical grip positions.
  • With or to 1 arm vs. performed w. both arms.
  • Re-grasping flight elements w. 1 hand (or the
"wrong grip") regrasping w. 2 hands.
  • hop elements same value w/o hop but different
    box (unless otherwise indicated).
  • Unless listed, skills with or from feet on the
bar are not permitted (exception Piatti
    elements).

173
Horizontal BarDifficulty Guidelines - II
  • Skills are 1 value higher
  • If finished double elgrip as opposed to 1 arm in
    elgrip
  • The base element value is
  • Not raised by ½ turn
  • Raised 1 letter for 1/1 turn
  • Raised 2 letters for 1/1 turn to double elgrip
  • Not raised by a hop
  • Raised 1 letter for re-grasp in double elgrip
