Focus How does the Guess Check (Guess
Improve) strategy aid us in obtaining an accurate
answer when we know no other way?

• Do Now The high temperatures for the past 5
  days are as follows 78, 82, 81, 87 and 82.
• Calculate the measures of central tendencies
  (mean, median mode) of the data given.

• The Guess and Check strategy requires students to
  guess a solution, test its correctness, and
  refines the guess using logical reasoning.
• If you don't know how to solve a problem, make an
  educated guess at the answer. Check your guess.
  If you're wrong, use what you've learned in
  checking your guess to make a better guess.
  Continue to guess, check, and modify until you
  find the answer.
• Guess and improve is slightly more sophisticated
  than guess and check. The idea is that you use
  your first incorrect guess to make an improved
  next guess.

  than guess and check. The idea is that you use

  the answer to best fit the question.

  grandfather has pigs and chickens on his farm.
  She noticed that there were a total of 26 heads
  and 68 feet among them. How many chickens and how
  many pigs did her grandfather have?
• 2. A 800 seat multiplex is divided into 3
  theatres. There are 270 seats in Theatre 1, and
  there are 150 more seats in Theatre 2 than in
  Theatre 3. How many seats are in Theatre 2?
• 3. Magic squares have been a fascinating topic in
  mathematics for centuries. They are formed by
  filling in all the squares with the numbers
  starting from one so that the sum of all row,
  columns, and diagonals is the same. Use the
  numbers 1 through 9 (once each) so that each
  column, row and diagonal add up to 15. These
  squares are to get you started but you should
  make more if you need to.
