Title: Focus: How does the Guess

1
Focus How does the Guess Check (Guess
Improve) strategy aid us in obtaining an accurate
answer when we know no other way?
  • Do Now The high temperatures for the past 5
    days are as follows 78, 82, 81, 87 and 82.
  • Calculate the measures of central tendencies
(mean, median mode) of the data given.

2
  • The Guess and Check strategy requires students to
guess a solution, test its correctness, and
refines the guess using logical reasoning.
  • If you don't know how to solve a problem, make an
educated guess at the answer. Check your guess.
If you're wrong, use what you've learned in
checking your guess to make a better guess.
Continue to guess, check, and modify until you
    find the answer.
  • Guess and improve is slightly more sophisticated
than guess and check. The idea is that you use
your first incorrect guess to make an improved
    next guess.

Mini Lesson
  • Students in Mrs. Carroll's sixth-grade class
ordered school shorts. The denim shorts cost 15
and the flannel shorts cost9. If Mrs. Carroll's
students ordered 28 shorts and spend a total of
300, how many denim shorts did they order?

Mini Lesson Strategy Answer
  • Guess 10 for 15, and 18 for 9Test 10 x 15
    150 and 18 x 9 162150 162 312
  • Revise Too high. Try fewer 15 shorts.
  • Guess 9 for 15, and 19 for 9Test 9 x 15
    135 and 19 x 9 171135 171 406
  • Revise Too high. Try fewer 15 shorts.
  • Guess 8 for 15, and 20 for 9Test 8 x 15
    120 and 20 x 9 180120 180 300
  • The students ordered 8 denim shorts.

5
Work Period
  • 1. At the sport shop, an order comes in for 18
baseball hats. Some of the hats are 7 and some
are 9. The order's total is 142. How many hats
    are 9 hats?
  • 2. Lisa has 1.55 in nickels and quarters in her
piggy bank. If there are 11 coins, how many
    quarters does Lisa have?
  • 3.Last summer, eighteen people attended the Smith
Family Reunion. As part of the celebration, they
went to see a movie. Tickets for the children
were 5.00 each. Adult tickets cost 7.00.Mr.
Smith paid 116 for all the tickets. How many
children and how many adults attended the movie?
  • 4. Guitars have six strings and violins have
four strings. Mr. Jones has ten musical
    instruments with fifty-six strings altogether.
How many of each instrument does he have?

6
Closing
  • Guess and improve is slightly more sophisticated
than guess and check. The idea is that you use
your first incorrect guess to make an improved
next guess. Continue this process until you find
the answer to best fit the question.

7
Homework
  • 1. Jamie went out to her grandfather's farm. Her
grandfather has pigs and chickens on his farm.
She noticed that there were a total of 26 heads
and 68 feet among them. How many chickens and how
many pigs did her grandfather have?
  • 2. A 800 seat multiplex is divided into 3
theatres. There are 270 seats in Theatre 1, and
there are 150 more seats in Theatre 2 than in
Theatre 3. How many seats are in Theatre 2?
  • 3. Magic squares have been a fascinating topic in
mathematics for centuries. They are formed by
filling in all the squares with the numbers
starting from one so that the sum of all row,
columns, and diagonals is the same. Use the
numbers 1 through 9 (once each) so that each
column, row and diagonal add up to 15. These
squares are to get you started but you should
make more if you need to.
