  • In Europe, the French and Indian War is called
    The Seven Years War.
  • European nations now view North America as
    economically important and want to control it.

  • Strategic control of the Ohio River Valley is at
    the junction of three rivers and is the key to
    the war
  • 1. Allegheny

  • 3. Ohio

  • French built Fort Duquesne.
  • British/Americans built Fort Necessity, but
    George Washington had to soon surrender it to the
    French.

  • Benjamin Franklin and the Albany Plan of Union
    because it marks the first time the colonies
    gathered together.

  • To prepare for the war.
  • To manage relations with the Indians (to keep
    Iroquois as allies).
  • To control the land that may be taken from the
    French.
  • However, the plan failed, because the colonies
    did NOT want to give up their claims to the
    western lands.

    by the French and Indians.

    Minister William Pitt appoints James Wolfe as
    British commander in North America in 1758.

  • Wolfes Plan strike at the source of French
    power in North America which is the city of
    Quebec.

  • Quebec is difficult to attack, but the British
    plan to attack from the Plains of Abraham with no

  • England gets Florida from Spain (French allies)
  • Spain gets Louisiana Territory from French.
  • England gets Canada and all lands from the
    Atlantic to the Mississippi River.

  • NOTE Benjamin Franklin helped convince the
    British to take the lands in Canada instead of
    West Indian Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe.
    This is important, because it eliminated the
    French threat in North America. Therefore, the
    Americans (colonists) did not need the British
    protection from the French.
