Why Homebrew?
  • Its inexpensive
  • You can make better beer than store bought
  • It doesnt take long
  • ITS FUN!!!!

What do I need?
This kit will cost about 50 and includes
everything you need with the exception of a 5
gallon pot and the actual kit.

The Beer Kit
  • A kit for a standard ale type beer runs about
    25 and makes 5 gallons of beer!
  • Kit Contains
  • Hops
  • Yeast
  • Malt
  • Grains

MALTS
  • Beer is made with barley malts, hops, water and
    yeast
  • Malt is a syrup derived from the process of
    malting barley. Its what gives beer its body
  • There are light malts, dark malts, chocolate
    malts, etc.
  • The type of malt used defines the style of beer
    you want to make.
  • Stout? Use chocolate malt
  • Pale ale? Use a crystal malt
  • There are tons of different malts that are
    distinguished from each other by the degree of
    roasting the barley grains.

Malt
  • Fortunately for us, most recipes will tell us
    what malts to use and the actual malting has been
    done already
  • Rule of thumb is- The darker the malt, the darker
    the beer.
  • Malts come in liquid form

Hops- The Sweet Bitter
  • Hops are crucial to beer. They are what gives
    beer its signature taste. Their job is to
    counter-act the extreme sweet taste of the malt.
  • There are hundreds of hop varieties. That are
    broken down into 2 categories
  • Bittering Hops
  • These are the main hops that add the bitterness
    to the malt
  • Finishing Hops
  • Added at the end to give aroma

Yeasts
  • The final ingredient is yeast. Yeast provides
    carbonation so our beer isnt flat. It also
    imparts a distinct flavor to some styles of beer.
  • FACT- All major beer makers (Bud, Coors, etc)
    artificially carbonate their beer because its
    faster and cheaper. When you do that you are
    missing out on some great flavor. One more reason
    why you should brew your own!
  • Yeast eats the sugars in beer and converts it
    to carbon dioxide.

The Process
  • The actual process is much easier than you might
    think and it can be done in about 2 hours!
  • Boil about 2.5 gallons of water
  • Dump in your malts and stir until dissolved
  • Dump in your hops
  • Boil about 45 minutes
  • Let cool to room temp
  • Its important that you do this is sanitary as
    possible. Even a little bit of crud that gets
    into your wort as its now called can ruin your
    whole batch!

The Process
  • There are two ways to cool down your wort

Use an immersion chiller
Or soak in an ice bath
Whatever method, do it fast to reduce
contamination risk!

Process
  • Once your wort is cooled, strain it into your
    carboy
  • Put the cork on with the
  • airlock

The airlock allows Co2 to escape. When it stops
bubbling, your beer is done!

Almost Done!!
  • After about a week, the beer is ready to be
    bottled
  • Siphon the beer from the carboy to a bucket and
    add a small amount of priming sugar to the
    bucket (the priming sugar is the sugar that the
    leftover yeast in your beer will eat that adds
    carbonation. At this point, the beer is not yet
    carbonated)
  • Bottling is simple. Put the caps on the bottle
    and crimp them down with the capper

DONE!!!!
  • Be sure to store your beer in a cool dark place.
  • Light will give your beer a skunky flavor.
  • The final step???????????
