Title: Student Theme Group

1
Student Theme Group _at_ Queens University,
Belfast September 2004
2
Student Theme Group
  • Last CDIO meeting the Student Theme Group
    discussed the following
  • The interpretation of CDIO according to students
  • Students think of CDIO as a buzzword
  • The students and facultys awareness of CDIO in
    the curriculum
  • The advantage of CDIO projects
  • CDIO projects in different years
  • Students concern of CDIO taking focus away from
    the core curriculum
  • Misconception of the term International
    Collaboration
  • Similar Programs to CDIO, thus why is CDIO better?

3
Last CDIO meeting
  • We concluded the following suggestions
  • Make CDIO seem more appealing by telling the
students the benefits they can obtain out of it
  • Let the students know that the implementation of
CDIO in the curriculum is their chance to have
an active role in their education
  • Alert students that CDIO is not a design process
or method, it represents a framework for good
practice in engineering, in here lies the
misconception of CDIO according to students
  • Promote the fact that there is a international
collaboration towards a common and improved
    engineering education worldwide
  • For detailed information, refer to the report
Students Perspective and Solutions for Bettering
the Implementation of CDIO in the Curriculum

4
Students Problem
  • But still today, the main
  • problem remains that
  • Students from each university do not understand
the meaning and purpose of the implementation of
    CDIO.
  • WHY?
  • Students are lazy
  • Students are self centered (what is in it for
    me?)
  • Student want a great education handed to them on
    a silver platter
  • Faculty explains CDIO in about a millions words

5
Student Theme Group
  • Solutions
  • Promote CDIO to students by telling them HOW it
will benefit THEM in their future careers.
  • Have a SIMPLE explanation of the purpose and
    meaning of CDIO

6
Student Theme Group
  • SOLUTIONS 1
  • The Students Corner
  • Contains brief description of CDIO, in point form
  • Contains the meaning and purpose of CDIO
    according to fellow students
  • A list of benefits for the students by having
    CDIO in their curriculum
  • Contains a list of skills and knowledge they will
    acquire with implementation of CDIO

7
Student Theme Group
  • SOLUTION 2
  • To distribute a CDIO Survey to First Year
students at the beginning of their CDIO
    introduction course
  • To distribute a CDIO Survey to Fourth Year
students in second last semester to determined if
in fact they have obtained the skills and
knowledge necessary to enter the workforce

Student Theme Group
  • CDIO Student Surveys
  • Will serve as an introduction to CDIO for first
    year students
  • Will set an expected levels of proficiency for
    the incoming students
  • Will determine the levels of proficiency obtained
    from the graduating engineers
  • Can compare results with alumni/-ae, faculty, and
    industry proficiency levels
  • Can serve as a check list for the graduating
engineers before entering the work force

16
Student Theme Group
  • Paper versus Electronic Survey
  • Students felt the response would be more
influential if it was to be handed out in class
  • Department could do a draw for higher responses

17
Student Theme Group Stability
  • Why have a Student Theme Group present at the
    meetings?
  • CDIO needs student feedback
  • Students are the consumers in CDIO
  • We serve as a link between International
Collaborators meetings and the students back home
  • Students need a full perspective of CDIO from a
    student point of view
  • To be a student voice at these meeting
  • To miss school, and get a trip covered by the
department...thanks by the way for that

18
Student Theme Group Stability
  • PROBLEM STUDENTS KEEP GRADUATING!
  • SOLUTION
  • Each participating university needs one or two
set CDIO student representative elected by the
student body, only one representative needs to
    come to the meetings
  • The CDIO representative must write a TRANSITION
REPORT from the meetings attended at the end of
each year for next participant to take over

19
Student Theme Group Stability
  • We need your
  • GOAL for meeting in South Africa We hope to have
a student representative from each school.
  • WITHOUT THE STUDENT THEME GROUP, CDIO IS NOT
    CREATING A FULL CYCLE.
  • Please send e-mail to kubrick_at_me.queensu.ca when
you will know who your Student Representative
    will be.

20
Student Theme Group
  • Future Goals
  • Construct a well organized Student Theme Group
  • Post the CDIO Student Corner before the next
    meeting
  • Prepare and conduct CDIO Student Survey in Fall
    2006
  • Graduate and pass the torch
  • and more that will be outlined this afternoon
