Polishing Media that can be used in any machine and by changing composition shape and size and deburring, polishing, burnishing, radiusing etc. It is also used in mass finishing application, for light and heavy deburring, fast and aggressive metal removal.

A hollow bar is always round and can look like a pipe or a tube, however, typically the walls are much thicker. A hollow bar has the strength of a solid round bar, but since there is no center, there is less weight per foot which can sometimes save money, without compromising strength. and Bead blasting refers to the use of round spherical media that, when impacted against the surface of a part, will leave a more uniform finish caused by the sphere “dimpling” the surface. This process is most often used when a smooth uniform finish is required and the part must have a dull “satin” finish.

Removing heavy rust (picture above) off steel can be accomplished successfully using an abrasive blasting process. While effective, the etched finish can be a challenge to polish. A vibratory tumbling process will remove the oxidation and leave a matte surface finish which can be subsequently polished.These steel tubular parts were cleaned and polished in a 2-step vibratory tumbling process first using a general purpose Ceramic Media to remove the oxidation and any pitting caused by the rust (picture below left). The second step involved a Precision Ceramic Sphere to smooth out the surface finish and produce a polished surface finish (picture below right)

The part was tumbling with a lighter and less abrasive Synthetic Tumbling Media to deburr the part, clean up the surface, and provide only light edge rounding. The result is a smooth, matte finish that could be coated or polished as necessary.

This small polyamide, thermoplastic resin, hardened part had a rough surface finish as well as flashing that needed to be removed. The challenge in deflashing and polishing plastic parts is to choose a media that will be aggressive enough to remove enough material to create a smooth finish without scratching or etching the surface too much so that the part can be polished successfully.

Walnut shell polishing media are used in many deburring and polishing application to polish or cleaning fine metals, alloys, mechanical parts, stones, shell cartridges, beans and seeds. Walnut shell polishing media cleans and removes matter from surface without damaging underlying material.

The part on the right is the result of a simple mass finishing process to create a uniform, matte surface finish. The part (aluminum cylinders) were vibratory tumbled in a wet process with a general purpose (KM) Ceramic Media and cleaning/lubricating compound for 2 hours. Ceramic Media is typically used with harder metals such as steel; however, in this case, there was no need to further polish the part. If a higher polish is required, a lighter cutting Plastic or Synthetic Media can be used in a (potentially) longer cycle time. This step would be followed with a polishing step.
