Title: ADULTERY

ADULTERY
2
INTRODUCTION
  • What the Bible says about adultery stands in
stark contrast to todays casual view of sexual
    encounters.
  • The issues of adultery relate to sex, but much
more profoundly they relate to vows and
    faithfulness.
  • Marriage vows concern faithful commitment to one
person, just as our vows to God concern our
    faithfulness to him.
  • God insists on being the one divine love in our
lives, that we will not elevate any other person,
object, or deity to his level.
  • The marriage union is symbolic of that
    commitment.
  • As we remain faithful to our mate, we understand
more of what it means to be faithful to God.

3
INTRODUCTION
  • This faithfulness allows us to share an intimacy
and a common purpose that is not possible in
casual relationships and is, in fact, destroyed
    by adulterous relationships.
  • The vow starts with Gods commitment to us. He
will never leave us or forsake us.
  • So he expects that same kind and degree of
    commitment from us.
  • Marital vows and commitment are symbolic of our
greater commitment to one God and one only.
  • The sexual dimensions of human love are Gods
provision for marital commitment to find
expression in a most unique, rich, rewarding way
that reflects our love relationship with God.
  • That is why God guards the marriage relationship
    as something special and pure.

4
DOES GOD SPECIFICALLY FORBID ADULTERY OR IS IT
MERELY IMPLIED IN SCRIPTURE?
  • Exodus 2014 . . . Do not commit adultery.
  • The command of God is about as specific as a
command can get-you must not commit adultery.
  • He does not simply suggest to us that we should
not do it he demands it.
  • God is clear concerning what he expects.

5
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO AVOID ADULTERY?
  • Matthew 1519 . . . From the heart come evil
thoughts, murder, adultery, all other sexual
    immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
  • The seeds of adultery are planted in the garden
    of the heart.
  • Guard what is planted in your heart-through what
you read, watch, or think about-to avoid growing
    the fruit of adultery.

6
THE CONSEQUENCES OF ADULTERY ARE SEVERE AND
LASTING.
  • Proverbs 632 . . . The man who commits adultery
is an utter fool, for he destroys his own soul.
  • Like most sin, adultery is a momentary act of
    pleasure that has dire consequences.
  • Leviticus 2010 . . . If a man commits adultery
with another mans wife, both the man and the
woman must be put to death.
  • In Bible times adultery was considered so evil
that it demanded the death penalty. Imagine how
many would be executed if this law were to be
    enforced today.

7
WHAT IS GODS DEFINITION OF ADULTERY?
  • Adultery is being unfaithful to your mate.
    Hebrews 134
  • Normally, this involves forming a sexual
relationship with someone other than your spouse.
  • But even an intimate emotional relationship with
another can become adulterous if it takes us away
    from our first love.
  • Similarly, in the spiritual realm, we commit
adultery against God when we are unfaithful to
him by worshiping anything except him.

8
PROMISES FROM GOD
  • Proverbs 624 . . . These commands and this
teaching will keep you from the immoral woman,
from the smooth tongue of an adulterous woman.
  • Matthew 58 . . . God blesses those whose hearts
are pure, for they will see God.
