1
The Effects of Ice Chips on Reducing Sore
Throat after Extubation in Patients Undergone
Surgery with General Anesthesia at Sampran
Hospital in Nakhon Pathom Province.

2
Background and rationale
  • Sore throat after extubation in patients
    who have
  • undergone surgery under general anesthesia is
an acute pain, which can cause suffering in
    patients both physically and mentally.
  • Therefore, after extubation in general
anesthesia, patients need holistic care to reduce
sore throat. The cold from ice chips is part of
independent nursing care to reduce sore throat
and this therapy can promote physical, mental,
    emotional, and social balance.

3
Conceptual framework
  • The framework of this study was based on
concept of the gate control theory (Melzack and
Wall,1982) and endogenous pain control theory
    (Huges,et al. 1975)

4
Objective
  • The objective of this study is to test the
effectiveness of ice chips to reduce pain level
of sore throat after extubation and duration of
times to reduce sore throat between the
experimental group and the control group.

5
Research hypotheses
  • 1. After extubation, all patients with sore
throat who received general anesthesia with
endotracheal tube, the experimental group had
less level of pain of sore throat than the
    control group.
  • 2. After extubation, the experimental group had
less pain on the following days.
  • 3. After extubation, the experimental group had
less duration of times on reducing sore throat
    than the control group.

6
Scope of the study
  • The study was quasi experimental research
designed to test the effects of ice chips on
reducing sore throat after extubation in patients
who undergone surgery with general anesthesia.
  • This research was conducted among pregnant
patients who received ceasarean section and
    general anesthesia with endotracheal tube.

7
Scope of the study
  • After extubation, the researcher
assessed the pain level of sore throat in the
experimental group and the control group. If the
score of pain level 4, patients in the
experimental group received ice chips and the
control group received standard post operative
    nursing care.
  • This study was conducted at Sampran
Hospital in Nakhon Pathom Province, from October
2007 to April 2008. Purposive sampling with
inclusion criteria was used to select 30 patients
    to join the study.

8
Methods
  • Population and sampling
  • The population of this study were
pregnant patients, who received caesarean section
and general anesthesia, with endotracheal tube.
After extubation, the population who had pain
score level of sore throat 4 were selected.
  • Purposive sampling was used to select
30 patients to join the study. The samples were
randomly divided into two groups the
    experimental and the control groups.

9
Setting
  • The study was conducted in postpartum ward at
Sampran Hospital in Nakhon Pathom Province.

10
Data analysis
  • Data were analyzed by using mean,
standard deviation, independent sample t-test and
    repeated measure ANOVA. The kolmogorov-smirnov
test was used to test the assumption of the
dependent variable normality. The test indicated
that all dependent variables in this study met
    normality assumption.

11
Results
  • The sample in this research consisted
of 30 subjects, the experimental group was
composed of 15 patients and the control group was
composed of 15 patients. The results of this
    study revealed that
  • 1. The mean score level of sore throat
in the experimental group was less than the
control group and was significantly different
    (P-value 0.00)
  • 2. The mean score level of sore throat
in the experimental group was reduced, and was
    significantly different (P-value 0.00)
  • 3. The mean score of a duration of
times to reduce sore throat in the experimental
group was less than the control group, and was
    significantly different (P-value 0.00)

12
Conclusion
  • This study recommends that ice chips can
reduce sore throat after extubation. Nurses can
integrate this recommendation into their post
operative nursing care to reduce sore throat, as
    an independent nursing role.
  • This will improve patients
comfort, satisfaction and the quality of nursing
care, which is concerned with both physical and
    mental aspects of patients health.
