Welcome to Mandrake Linux 8.1
  • Welcome to the Mandrake Linux 8.1 KDE desktop.
  • Some of the desktop icons may be familiar if you
already use Linux, and some are newly included in
    8.1.
  • The following pages briefly introduce them.

8
Your Own Personal Folder - Home
  • Each user on a Linux system has their own folder
to store personal files. The Home icon on the
desktop is a convenient shortcut to access your
    home directory.

9
Network Monitoring
  • The Internet icon contains either a dialer for a
dial-up modem, or a network monitoring utility
depending on which device you use for Internet
    access.

10
Storage Devices
  • The CD-ROM, Floppy disk, and other removable
    devices utilize the Supermount utility.
Supermount manages removable media such as floppy
disks, CD-ROMs and Zips similar to the way other
operating systems do -- it allows you to change
disks without using the traditional Unix commands
"mount" and "unmount". Supermount detects media
    changes automatically.
  • And, as in other graphical environments, KDE
provides a Trash bin where you can place files to
be deleted. Right-click on the Trash bin and
select "Empty Trash Bin" to permanently remove
    any enclosed files or folders.

11
Documentation
  • The Documentation icon provides quick access to
    helpful documentation on several topics.

12
Printing
  • Drag and Drop files onto the icon for quick
    printouts.
