The Freiburg Overview Week comes at an exciting
moment of the project
Major construction milestones have been passed
during the recent months In detail progress
will be discussed over the coming days, and we
can look forward to many exciting reports here
just a few examples
The first of the eight large super- conducting
barrel toroid coils has been tested successfully
as was the completed barrel LAr EM
calorimeter and the superconducting
solenoid in the common cryostat They will go
to the pit in less than three weeks!

ATLAS will welcome a lot of very distinguished
guests for the forthcoming CERN celebrations
The surface buildings and the underground cavern
are ready and well-advanced and installation of
the ATLAS detector has stared

ALU Freiburg we are all looking forward to
the Lab visits here!

  • Latest updates on the LHC machine status
  • The Director-General called for a special
    information meeting about the Cryoline (QRL)
    situation,
  • which took place on 14th September (CSO,
    experiments, LHC PL and few experts, some
    department
  • heads) - TC, SP and CB chairs were invited
  • The DG introduced the main message (as also
    given to SPC and Council in September)
  • Until June the issues were thought to be mainly
    contractual and bad organization within Air
    Liquide
  • End of June the real technical problems were
    discovered, and a Task Force was set up to plan
    the next actions
  • Today the plan is to repair the QRL lines already
    here by CERN (with components from AL) and have
    AL produce and install new lines (restart
    installation in November)
  • In the meantime AL was stopped, a meeting/review
    this week with them should re-launch work
  • A full assessment will only be possible at the
    end of the year
  • Every effort is made, and it looks today still
    possible, that the closure of the machine in
    April 2007, and beams in Summer 2007, will be
    maintained
  • Take this as a positive message to give to the
    community, even though no guarantee can be given
    (positive message within limits)
  • Lyn Evans gave details of the history and
    problems for the QRLs (see next slides)
  • There was not much discussion at this meeting

which proceeds well, as can be seen from the LHC
Dashboard

The main presentation was then of course on the
QRL problems He recalled that in the prototype
phase the AL modules were the best and the
cheapest by a substantial amount (of three
firms) AL has a subcontractor for installation,
and Had many contractual conflicts with
the Initial one (which was then changed) AL then
neglected QC in order to go fast in order to
catch up accumulated delays
End of June CERN found (almost accidentally) the
main technical fault cracked and broken
epoxy- molded sliding support tables for the
various cryo-pipes inside the lines For the
series, the wrong base material (wrong fibre
lengths) was used, which is an order of
magnitude less shock-resistant (damage is
thought to have happened during transport and
handling) About 600 pipe-modules and 30
service-modules are at CERN, for which this
support tables (2 per pipe-module) have all to
be changed, 400 at the surface, 200 somewhere in
the tunnel (with special effort over Christmas
when the test station will not work) Fresh QRL
module installation will start in November in
sector 8 ? 1 Lyn Evans stated that his biggest
worry (besides QRL) is the availability of expert
commissioning manpower

QRL Recovery Plan
  • Qualify conforming material for component
    manufacture and restart production (15th
    September).
  • Task force to verify mechanical design of the
    line to ensure that there are no more weak points
    (done).
  • Set up a facility at CERN for the repair of pipe
    elements (ICS cryostating contract) and special
    elements (main workshop).
  • Restart installation of sector 8-1 under good
    conditions with close CERN supervision. (1st
    November)
  • Install local cabling in 7-8 before QRL restart.

Comments on the financial situation
Cash flow The situation has somewhat improved
for the coming year, due to several factors,
and not the least also to some funding agencies
who succeeded in their efforts to help
ATLAS However there are a number of Funding
Agencies which still have large outstanding
contributions to the baseline construction Common
Fund, and this is affecting the cash flow deficit
particularly badly

Cost to Completion funding Apart for some
notable exceptions, the situation has evolved
little over the last months, this means that if
not changed in the near future, ATLAS will have
to start with a compromised initial
detector Good progress on the construction,
integration and installation fronts can be used
now as major arguments when negotiating again
with the Funding Agencies!

Installation Schedule, working version 6.24 The
recently passed milestones of the BT-1 and the
LAr barrel tests allow us now to be more
confident on the schedule ? a strong commitment
from all Institutes is needed over the coming
years to keep it!

The time has come to plan now also the operation
of the experiment, and the ATLAS management has
started to work on a proposal with which we will
solicit feedback from all !

Main goals in very general terms Get a global
view of where we stand in all aspects of the
preparations for our experiment Recall that
they all concern us, and that we share much more
than just the areas of our own activities ?
should make us aware of the necessary transition
from construction to operation The major focal
points are clear - Completion of the
construction - Assembly and integration of the
detector units - Computing and software -
Physics preparation - Installation -
Commissioning Last, but not least, enjoy a
stimulating and motivating time together Over
the weekend with the topical workshops we could
already see easily that our hosts have made the
outmost that this will happen, in a pleasant and
stimulating atmosphere and a beautiful setting
offered by the historic city of Freiburg
