  • A beautiful and sheltered natural harbour
  • Strategic location between South pacific,
    Europe, Gulf, Asia and Africa
  • Port development efforts started in 1970
  • It has remained in the heart of Seychelles
    economy handling almost all Foreign Trade and
    extraction of revenue from island cruise ships
  • Classified as an efficient port and enjoys
    reputation as fastest handler of cargo in this
    part of world
  • A clean port with relatively far less pollution

PORT VICTORIA
  • Seychelles became a member of IALA(International
    Association of Lighthouse authorities) to ensure
    safety of navigation in Seychelles waters
    including harbour
  • Seychelles port since beginning has been working
    towards protection of environment, assistance in
    SAR missions, safety of cargo and providing well
    oiled customs, immigration facilities

  • 1994- Re look in operations of port to make it
    more attractive and competitive. East Coast land
    reclamation project started- the biggest
    developmental project undertaken in Seychelles

EAST COAST LAND RECLAIMATION PROJECT
  • Started in 1994 in order to diversify the economy
    and broaden the base
  • Project incorporated further development of port
    facilities as follows-
  • Separation of functions like fuelling, oil/LPG
    discharge
  • Resurfacing of ports land
  • Improvement of maintenance facilities
  • Extension and deepening of turning areas of ships
    to allow safe maneuvering of big tankers/cargo
    vessels

EAST COAST LAND RECLAIMATION PROJECT
  • Commercial port built in an area of approx 5
    hectare with 265 meters long quay and water depth
    of 10.6 meters- A combined passenger, general
    cargo, oil discharging and fuel supply harbour
  • Additional 16.5 hectares of new land allocated to
    new port area for future development resulting in
    extension of quay by 120 meters with an increase
    in depth to allow larger boats and tankers to
    berth alongside

  • The extension by 120 meters in addition to
    existing 265 meters with 13 meter depth provides
    excellent facilities for container transshipment
    making Port Victoria the most important in this
    area.
  • The third part of the extension was the extension
    of 90 meters to the tuna quay providing more
    facilities for fishing industries.

PRIVATIZATION OF PORT CARGO HANDLING
  • 1995- Privatisation of port cargo handling
  • Land Marine Ltd, a consortium of local maritime
    related intrests with minor govt stake took over
    the state controlled port operations with the aim
    to make the port more efficient, Increase
    productivity and improve turnaround times
  • The benefits of this move are evident with
    turnaround time down from two/three days to just
    few hours

COMMERCIAL TUNA PURSE SEINERS
  • Starting of Commercial Tuna Purse Seiners
    activities- year 1984
  • Harvesting rate in beginning years- approx 100
    tons per annum
  • Facilities at Industrial Fishing port were
    sufficient for level of operations at that time

  • Rapid increase in activities in the past ten
    years
  • Tuna Fishing industry has proved itself to be
    second most economical activity in the country
  • 80 of the ports activities and also revenue
    related to Tuna Fishing industry

  • Limited berthing capacity for such large number
    of vessels leading to congestion
  • Insufficient space for logistics/ land based
    support
  • Increase in the size of vessels
  • Inadequate repair facilities

    governed by Board of Directors and managed by
    Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

  • Audit by expert from Port De Marseille in Dec
    2004 clearly spells out main revenue for SPA and
    second asset of Seychelles economy is Commercial
    Tuna Purse Seiners activity
  • To sustain the development and overcome future
    challenges Seychelles need to have efficient and
    reliable land based support
  • Keen interest has been shown by investors to
    develop this area

    Zone 14 as an ideal location to cater for all
    necessary logistic land based support for Purse
    Seiners activities

  • Construction of 300 meter quay to facilitate
    access to services at Zone 14 by sea
  • Provision of essential amenities (water,
    electricity, telephone etc) by other
    governmental agencies
  • Improvement of safety and security in port
  • Consent of government and investors for creation
    of new ship repair facility (Floating/ Dry dock
    project)

    envisaged. The project has been estimated at SR
    97.5 million
  • Re organisation of industrial fishing port back
    up support infrastructure into common building
  • Existing inter island quay to be extended by an
    additional 50 meters

    at inter island quay with all facilities

  • Port Victoria strategic location in Indian Ocean
    makes it the Port of choice of shipping community
  • Pro active steps are being taken by Government to
    ensure world class services in port
  • SPA since its creation has taken number of
    positive steps to improve facilities and services
    and results are evident
