Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.History of Kappa
Alpha Psi
  • KA? was founded, January 5, 1911 at Indiana
    University, by ten African-American college
students - the late Revered Founders, Elder
Watson Diggs John M. Lee Byron K. Armstrong
Guy L. Grant Ezra D. Alexander Henry T. Asher
Marcus P. Blakemore Paul W. Caine Edward G.
    Irvin and George W. Edmonds.
  • Kappa Alpha Psi is the 2nd oldest existing
    collegiate historically Black Greek Letter
Fraternity and the 1st intercollegiate fraternity
incorporated as a national body on May 15, 1911
    as Kappa Alpha Nu.
  • The name was officially changed to Kappa Alpha
    Psi on April 15, 1915.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.History of Kappa
Alpha Psi
  • The Founders endured acts of racial hatred and
hostility and formulated this fraternity to
alleviate the feeling of isolation and raising
the sights of Black youth higher than they may
    have otherwise realized.
  • Fashioning ACHIEVEMENT as its purpose, Kappa
Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture,
patriotism and honor in a Bond of fraternity.
  • Since it's founding in 1911, the Fraternity has
never limited membership based on color, creed or
    national origin.
  • KA? has over 125,000 members with 700
Undergraduate and Alumni chapters in every state
of the United States, and international chapters
in the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea, Japan, the
    West Indies and South Africa.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.History of North
Central Province
  • In the beginning, the Fraternity was essentially
a coalition of chapters, located mainly in the
Midwest. As the Fraternity continued to grow, a
strategic plan was implemented to effectively
manage the future expansion of the Fraternity and
    service its needs.
  • In 1920, Grand Keeper of the Exchequer, George F.
David, II proposed organizing the Fraternity into
Districts with a Director, appointed by the Grand
    Polemarch.
  • At the 10th Grand Chapter Meeting, David became
the 3rd Grand Polemarch and initiated this idea
and the Fraternity was divided into three
    Districts.

8
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.History of North
Central Province
  • By 1922, the Fraternity had established chapters
on 18 campuses in 12 cities, including two in the
    South.
  • W. Ellis Stewart was elected the 4th Grand
Polemarch and he increased the number of
Districts to 7 and they then became known as
    Regions.
  • At the 15th Grand Chapter Meeting in 1925, the
Fraternity again adjusted the names of the
Regions and denoted them as Provinces and
likewise the Regional Directors were named
    Province Polemarchs.
  • There is not a direct correlation to geographical
location of the Districts or Regions to the
current day Provinces. Also, Province Polemarchs
were initially appointed to govern a Province
irrespective of where he may reside.

9
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.History of North
Central Province

as the Central Province and included the same
geography as today with the exception of the
state of Iowa. Today, the North Central Province
consists of a 5-state region including Indiana,
    Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota Wisconsin.
  • 22 Province Polemarchs have led North Central
Province since its inception. Korlon Kilpatrick,
II is the 23rd Brother appointed to this
    position.
  • 6 Chicago Alumni members have been appointed to
lead the North Central Province in the capacity
of Province Polemarch C. Leon Wilson, Julius
