Misdemeanors v. Felonies

• Misdemeanors - Are less severe. They carry a jail
  sentence of less that one year or a fine or both.
• Hunting out of season
• False identification
• Trespassing on property
• Using snakes to harm another person

• Felonies - Are more severe. They carry a prison
  sentence of more than one year in jail, a fine,
  or both.
• Examples
• Murder
• Burglary
• Intent to kill
• Arson
• Gang related activities

Crimes Against People

• Acts that threaten hurt, or end a persons life.
  They are also called violent crimes
• Examples
• Assault - Attacking someone
• Rape
• Murder and Manslaughter

Crimes Against Property

• Three types of stealing
• 1. Larceny - taking something from someone
  without force.
• 2. Robbery - taking something from someone by
  violence or threat.
• 3. Burglary - breaking in and planning to do
  something illegal (not always stealing)

• Arson - Setting fire to someones property
• Vandalism - Damaging someones property

White Collar Crimes

• Illegal nonviolent crimes committed by
  professionals.
• Examples
• Fraud - Taking property by lying
• Embezzlement - Taking money that was trusted to
  you

Nonviolent Crimes

• Acts that hurt no one but the person committing
  the act. They go against societys values.
• Examples
• Drug Use
• Suicide

• Examples
• Treason - Betraying ones country by helping its
  enemies.
• Terrorism - People using violence or threats of
  violence to get what they want from a government
  or a society.

  is and the specific crime being committed.

• 1. You leave your locker unlocked and the money
  is stolen from your purse.
• 2. You are at the movies and a person holds a
  knife to your back and says give me your money
  or you will die. You give them the money.

• 3. While in the parking lot of the store a person
  beats you up. They do not rob you.
• 4. A person sells drugs.

• 6. Bob works for a landscaping business. He makes
  the deposits everyday. He takes 5.00 a day from
  the deposits and deposits it in his own account.

• 7. A government employee sells plans to Iran for
  a nuclear missile.
• 8. A man is shot and killed by his neighbor
  because his neighbor was angry at him.
