Title: Temperature Scales

1
Temperature Scales
2
What does temperature mean?
  • Its a measure of the average kinetic energy of
    the particles in a substance.

3
What are the three temperature scales?
  • Celsius
  • Fahrenheit
  • Kelvin

4
What is Celsius?
  • Its the scale used by most of the world.
  • At 0C, water freezes
  • At 100C, water boils

5
What is Kelvin?
  • Its the scale used by scientists. Its 273
    units higher than Celsius.
  • K C 273
  • Water freezes at 273K
  • Water boils at 373K
  • There are no negative numbers.

6
What is absolute zero?
  • Its the lowest temperature that scientists have
    achieved.
  • No particle movement everything stopped moving.
  • Its the point at which no more energy can be
    removed from matter.
  • Its 0K (-273C).

7
What does thermal energy measure
  • It measures the total energy of the particles in
    a substance.
  • We use temperature to describe and compare
    thermal energy.
  • Thermal energy is dependent upon the state of
    matter of a substance.
  • Solid little energy
  • Liquid medium energy
  • Gas lots of energy
