Customizing Your CHKS
  • Modify sample size or design
  • Administer annually
  • Administer pre/post to program participants

Active Consent
  • MUST be used in grades below seven
  • No child can be surveyed without written
    permission from the parent
  • The challenge with active consent is ensuring
    that parents receive and return the forms to the
    school
  • With active consent, the teacher is the key
  • Provides extra protection against surveying a
    student whose parents do not approve

Passive Consent
  • Optional for 7th grade and above must do active
    for 5th grade
  • Written notice is sent to parents about the
    survey, who in turn notify the school only if
    they do NOT want their child to participate
  • The challenge with passive consent is ensuring
    that parents are fully notified
  • Need District Board policy
  • With passive consent, the school-level contact is
    very important

CDE Guidelines Assessing Data Representativeness
  • 100 of selected schools participate
  • Appropriate class subject or period (if sampling)
  • 100 of classrooms participated (if sampling only
    those selected with participate)
  • Minimum 70 returned consent forms (active
    consent)
  • 5. Minimum 60 useable answer sheets

How the SCS Works
  • Sign up for the SCS when you sign up for the CHKS
  • Online survey given in same time frame as CHKS

You will receive survey instructions sheets for
staff that include logins and passwords Logins
valid for a 30-day survey window Monitor response
rates and get reports online

First Steps for Administering the CHKS

Train and Inform Staff
  • Decide teachers, staff, or outside proctors
  • Review Instructions
  • Via website Tools then Instructions
  • Vary by consent type
  • Include logs for tracking consents
  • Include Proctor Script Assurance of
    Confidentiality
  • Make sure everyone is familiar with consent
    procedures and all materials, especially the
    Transmittal Envelopes.
  • Explain SCS and 30-day window

Conduct Survey
  • Finalize who can/cant take the survey
  • Distribute CHKS materials
  • Conduct surveys and make-ups
  • Return answer sheets (by June 15th)
  • Submit ASRC (Answer Sheet Return Checklist)

  • Since Nov. 2005 all KEY FINDINGS have been posted
  • Starting Nov. 2007 all TECHNICAL REPORTS will be
    posted along with the KEY FINDINGS

  • Changes to Secondary Added questions to align to
    YRBS and National Survey on Drug Use Health
  • Reorganization Core is now ALL that is required
    for Middle and High School!

  • Deleting/moving questions to make room
  • Replacing or modifying questions that measured
    similar areas

  • Friends disapproval of AOD use/weapons etc
    changed to new personal disapproval series
  • Wording on several AOD use questions to suit
    NOMS
  • Overall length is similar to 0607 but reworking
    has reduced it from 14 pages to 12 pages.
