  • The word 'Jaundice' is derived from the French
    word 'Jaune' meaning yellow.
  • Jaundice is the yellowish discolouration of the
    skin caused by an increase of bilirubin in the
    blood.
  • Neonatal jaundice is jaundice that occurs within
    the first month of baby's life.
  • It is a very common and occurs in 50 of babies
    in the first week of life

  • Physiological (normal) jaundice
  • Jaundice of prematurity
  • Breastfeeding jaundice
  • Breast milk jaundice
  • Blood group incompatibility (Rh or ABO problems)

Etiology / Causes???
  • Blood High RBC volume
  • abnormal hb, shape function
  • Blood group mismatch - ABO and Rh
  • incompatibility
  • Liver not adequately mature to process the
  • the excess bilirubin
  • Infection (Hepatitis B) or other
    defects
  • Lack of G6PD glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase

  • Extensive bruising during birth
  • Congenital infections (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella,
    Cytomegalovirus, Herpes Simplex, Syphilis etc)
  • Breast-feeding - In a poorly feeding baby, bowel
    movements are infrequent and this prevents the
    bilirubin from being excreted in the stools.

  • Dark colour of urine
  • Kern icterus
  • Fever
  • Hyper / hypotonia
  • High pitched cry
  • Deafness
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Mental retardation
