• Hawaii imp. b/c of trade with Asia

• King accepts new constitution limiting authority
  and increasing planters power

• Queen Liliuokalani1891 takes over power
• Overthrown by sugarcane planters and marines
• Pres. Clevelanddid not like imperialism and
  would not annex Hawaii
• Five years later Hawaii is brought into U.S.

• Wanted to establish power in the region
• Organization of American States org. to promote
  cooperation among nations of Western Hemisphere

  large navy
• Must defend and protect American interests
  overseas
• Captain Alfred Mahan wrote about how Am. Should
  build a navy and establish overseas bases to
  refuel, maintain, etc.
