  • Opportunities to study and work abroad in the EU

Erasmus Programme
  • The Erasmus scheme, funded by the European
    Commission, was introduced in 1987 to promote
    student mobility within the EU.
  • Erasmus offers EU students an opportunity to
    study and/or work (min 3 months, max 12 months)
    in another EU country.
  • Erasmus students can receive a grant to
    contribute to the extra costs of studying/working
    abroad.

Erasmus Grants
  • Erasmus grant allocations are made based on
    destination country, type of mobility, number of
    months abroad and funding available.
  • Erasmus grants are paid in 2 parts first payment
    near the beginning and second payment available
    during Sem 2.

  • Erasmus grants are paid directly into student
    bank accounts via BACS.
  • Grants are usually paid in sterling.
  • The initial grant amounts for 2009/2010 will be
    based on 225 EUR per month, for the number of
    months abroad.

  • A student studying and/or working in another
    Erasmus participating country for 10 months,
    would receive an initial grant of 2250 EUR
    (approx 2,070), calculated as follows
  • 225 EUR x 10 months 2250 EUR
  • Second grant allocations not usually available
    till mid- Semester 2

  • Below are some examples of grant funding based on
    2008/2009 amounts
  • A student studying in France, Germany or Spain
    for 10 months received an initial grant for the
    equivalent of 2450 EURO (1,948.06 based on
    exchange rate of 1.25766).
  • (245 x 10 months)

  • A student on work placement for 10 months in most
    participating countries received an initial grant
    for the equivalent of 2500 EURO (1,987.81 based
    on exchange rate of 1.25766)
  • This is calculated 250 x 10 months.
  • Second grant for both study and work abroad for
    2008/2009 is based on 140/month.

Erasmus Grant Paperwork
  • No formal application as such (Erasmus students
    notified to RREA via School/Divisional offices).
  • RREA sends information pack to student home
    address and/or via e-mail.
  • Info pack includes cover letter introducing
    Erasmus and instructions bank details form
    student mobility agreement (study and/or work
    incorporating a learning/training agreement)
    certificate of attendance Erasmus report form.

Erasmus Grant Paperwork
  • Learning Agreements all students studying abroad
    need to have a learning agreement signed by them,
    the home and host institution.
  • Training Agreements for students on work
    placement abroad a training agreement has to be
    signed by the student, home institution and work
    placement provider.

Erasmus additional information
  • Currently, students abroad as Erasmus for the
    whole academic year will have their tuition fees
    waived.
  • Should students return before completing a
    minimum of 3 months, the whole Erasmus grant will
    have to be repaid.
  • If a student returns earlier than planned, but
    after the min 3 months has been achieved, the
    amount to be repaid will be worked out pro-rata.

  • Application forms for partner universities check
    out the partner website. Most partners now have
    a standard application form/procedure.
  • Accommodation again, check out partner website
    for details.
  • Insurance whilst for health purposes most things
    are covered by the EHIC (European Health
    Insurance Card), its recommended that students
    take out their own insurance which will cover,
    for instance, additional medical/health items,
    personal possessions and personal/legal liability.
