Title: Concepts of Geography

1
Concepts of Geography
  • Location
  • Region
  • Spatial Pattern
  • Spatial Interaction
  • Human Environment Interaction
  • Culture

2
General Points
  • Geography - the study of the physical and human
environments of the world and the way in which
these environments interact with each other.
  • Concepts of geography
  • Are the basis of the geographic method - a method
    of inquiry
  • Are interconnected and tend to overlap or blend
  • Not all six used in every geographic study

3
Location
  • Answers the question where?
  • Relative Not exact - described by landmarks,
time, direction or distance from one place to
another. ie. Take exit 5 off highway 103, turn
left and SJA is the first right after you pass
    over the highway.
  • Absolute Exact - a latitude
    and longitude or a street
    address. ie. 31 Scholars Road
    or 44º4112N, 66º4857W

4
Human Environment Interaction
  • We live in and form part of the earths
environment. We change it for our needs.
  • We depend on, adapt to and modify the environment
  • ie planting a garden, mining,
    ski resort

5
Region
  • Places that are similar enough to each other that
    they can be grouped.
  • An area of land that has consistent or easily
    recognizable features.
  • Size can vary greatly.
  • Not limited to physical features only.
  • ie. Coastal region, Corn Belt of Canada, The
    Prairies, rainforests

6
Spatial Pattern
  • Something recurring in different places
  • Same effect found in places far apart.
  • ie. Suburbs where wealthy people live located
away from less desirable land uses, deforestation
    close to urban areas.

7
Spatial Interaction
  • An event in one location or region can lead to
change in another location or region some
    distance away.
  • ie. Spread of h1n1, drop in property values, Mt
    St Helens eruption

8
Culture
  • Customs and world view
  • Different views on environment and use of natural
    resources
  • Ie. Hummus, Christmas, hijab, etc.
