What is a cinquain?
  • A cinquain is a five-line poem that has special
    syllable counts.
  • A cinquain poem has its own unique format.

What is the layout?
  • Line 1 A one-word line, should be a noun. This
    is your subject.
  • Line 2 Two adjectives about the subject.
  • Line 3 Three verbs that end in ing that are
    about the subject.
  • Line 4 Four words about a feeling of the
    subject.
  • Line 5 One word synonym about subject.

  • is a dictionary that gives alternate words or
    synonyms.
  • can be used online as well.
  • can also be found of inside of a dictionary.

But how do I use a thesaurus?

Using a thesaurusin the classroom.
  • Search for the word you that you want just like
    you would while using a dictionary.
  • The alternative word will be listed. Just take
    your pick!

How to start
  1. Start by using the Gather Your Thoughts work
    sheet to get ideas on what subject you want to
    use.
  2. Next use the Cinquain Graphic Organizer worksheet
    to start your poem.
  3. Be sure to use both types of thesauruses to
    create synonyms in your poem!
  4. Put the finishing touches on your cinquain.

    your family for homework.

    video taped tomorrow!
