The First Amendment guarantees five of our most
basic liberties.

• Freedom of Religion
• Freedom of Speech
• Freedom of the Press
• Freedom of Assembly
• Freedom of Petition

Freedom of Religion means...

• ..the government cannot force us to accept one
  set of religious beliefs..

• ..our government cannot favor any religion
  through special laws, money or other help.

• ..the government may not interfere with the way
  we worship

Freedom of Speech..

• ..means that we can say whatever we think..
• However

• Making false statements about someone through
  gossip (slander), or on paper (libel) is not
  protected by the First Amendment

• Saying things that can lead to physically hurting
  others also is not protected..

Freedom of the Press

• ..makes it possible to stay informed about what
  our government is doing.

• Reporters and editors can criticize the
  government without risk of punishment
