  • 1. Letter from Financial Institution promising to
    pay stated sum upon receipt of specified
    documents.
  • The effect of the letter-of-credit is that a
    financial institution provides an advance
    commitment that it will make the required payment
    to the payee when due.
  • 3. The transaction payor/buyer has no right to
    cancel payment any time after the financial
    institute makes the payment commitment.
  • Payee faces small risk of nonpayment.
  • 5. No other payment system provides an advance
    assurance of payment as firm as the letter of
    credit.
  • 6. Most prominent application is in providing
    payment in international transactions for the
    sale of goods.
  • 7. The use of letters-of-credit in international
    transaction, signaled the need for a reliable
    uniform international principles. Financial
    institutions incorporated the UCP (Uniform
    Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits).
    Current revised Article 5 conforms to the UCP.
