The History

• On April 18th and 19th,Paul Revere, a messenger,
  rode from Boston to Lexington to warn the
  American militia of an impending British attack.

One if by land, and two if by sea

• This quote from the poem is referring to Reveres
  plan to use lanterns as signals to warn him how
  the British were attacking.
• One lantern meant they were coming by land, two
  lanterns meant they were coming by sea.
