• Born in Hanover County, Virginia.

• After failing at running a store and farming, he
  began studying law and received his license to
  practice in 1760.
• He was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses
  in 1765.
• He led Virginias opposition to British policy.

• Delivered the Speech in the Virginia Convention
  in 1775. The speech called for the colonies to
  resist British rule by taking up arms.
