Title: Present Tense of Regular Verbs

1
Presentation 1 Present Tense of Regular Verbs
2
The present tense of the verb is used to talk
about what is happening now or going to happen in
the immediate future.
Qué hacen tus padres? Ven televisión.
What are your parents doing? They are watching
TV.
3
For all tenses of verbs in Spanish, the verb
ending must agree with the subject of the
sentence in person and number. Person
Number 1st
Singular 2nd
Plural 3rd
4
First, lets look at the three singular forms of
the present tense verb. Singular, of course,
means referring to only one person or thing, but
singular forms are also used with groups treated
as a single unit, such as familia (family) and
equipo (team).
5
First person (I) First person
refers to the speaker of the sentence, either
alone (I) or as the spokesperson for a group
(we).
6
In Spanish, the 1st person subject pronouns, yo
and nosotros, may always be used as the subject
of a sentence in which the speaker is talking
about himself or herself.. Unlike in English
where subject pronoun use is obligatory, subject
pronouns are often omitted in Spanish.
7
If a speaker is talking about himself or
herself, the verb must indicate the agreement
between the subject and the verb through the use
of an first person singular ending. This form is
formed by adding the ending -o to the stem of
the verb.
8
The stem is usually formed by removing the -ar /
-er/ or -ir from the infinitive form of the verb.
hablo como vivo
hablar comer vivir
habl com viv
The appropriate verb ending is then attached to
the stem.

27
Second person (you) Second person
refers to the person the speaker of the sentence
is speaking to, either alone (you) or in a
larger group (yall).
28
In the Spanish spoken in Spain, the personal
pronouns tú and vosotros are often used to
address friends and family, but these again may
be omitted.
29
tú (familiar)
In addition, the Spanish language also
differentiates between familiar intimacy of
family and friends and formal situations which
require a show of respect in its usage of second
person pronouns and verb forms.
usted (formal)
30
Ejercicio 2
How would you address the following people in
conversation? On a sheet of paper to hand in,
write tú or usted as appropriate. (possible 10

1. tu maestro de español 6. tu amiga Sara 2.
tu mamá 7. tu perro Max 3.
un policía 8. tu abuela 4.
un niño 9. el
presidente 5. un adulto desconocido 10. tu
hermano
31
If the speaker is talking to another person about
that person the verb must have the second person
singular ending attached to it. When talking to
family and friends, this form is formed by adding
either -as or -es to the stem of the verb.
32
The stem of the verb is formed by removing -ar /
-er/ or -ir from the infinitive form of the verb.
habl com viv
hablas comes vives
hablar comer vivir
The second person singular verb ending is then
attached to this stem.

35
usted (formal)
tú (familiar)
Remember, however, that Spanish language
differentiates between familiar and formal
situations in its usage of second person pronouns
and verb forms. The -as and -es endings are used
only with the familiar tú form.
36
usted (formal)
tú (familiar)
The formal usted form is a second person singular
form of address used to show respect. Its ending
always corresponds with the third person forms of
the verb. Add -a to the verb stem for -ar verbs
and and -e for -er and -ir verbs.

39
usted (formal)
tú (familiar)
Probably the most common usage of the second
person singular familiar and formal verb forms is
its usage in questions which can be answered yes
or no. You ask a question using the tú or usted
form and that person answers your question using
the yo form of the verb. Unlike English usage,
you do not need to use helping verbs like are
or do in your quesiton.
40

about what they do in their free time. Change
the verb form of her question to appropriate 2nd

57
Third Person (he / she) Third
person refers to the person the speaker of the
sentence is speaking about, either alone (he /
she) or in a larger group (they).
58
The personal pronouns él and ella are often used
to talk about a person, place or thing, but often
these pronouns are omitted from a sentence.
59
Spanish does not have a pronoun equivalent to the
English pronoun it. Instead it uses the
masculine pronoun él with all masculine noun and
ella with all feminine nouns.
60
The third person ending can be viewed as the
default ending. If the subject is singular, and
the subject is not yo or tú, then the third
person ending is used.
61
Often the subject of the sentence in the third
person is a noun representing an object or a
person such as la silla or Rosa. If the subject
of the sentence is not yo, and is not tú, use 3rd
person endings.
62
The stem is usually formed by removing the -ar /
-er/ or -ir from the infinitive form of the verb.
habla come vive
hablar comer vivir
habl com viv
The appropriate verb ending is then attached to
the stem.
