  • Quick Review
  • Scientific Method
  • Metric System

3
The Scientific Method
  • 1 make an observation.
  • 2 ask a question.
  • 3 form a hypothesis (a possible explanation for
    an event)

4
  • 4 Set up an experiment to test the hypothesis.
  • 5 collect data from the experiment.
  • 6 Draw a conclusion from the data.

5
  • 7 Make a prediction based on the conclusion.

6
Parts of an experiment.
  • In an experiment we have a CONTROL GROUP and an
EXPERIMENTAL GROUP. Both groups are treated
exactly the same except for one variable.

7
  • The control group is designed without the
variable, the experimental group contains the
variable being tested. Only one variable can be
    tested at a time.

8
Presenting Scientific Data
  • Data may be reported using graphs, charts,
    tables, models, or diagrams.

9
Scientific Measurement
  • Scientists use SI units as a standard way to
measure things. SI stands for Le Systeme
    International d Unites.

10
  • SI units are based on the metric system which was
established in France about 200 years ago. It is
    based on multiples of ten.

11
  • The basic unit of mass in the metric system is
the gram. (mass is the amount of matter in an
    object)
  • The basic unit of liquid volume in the metric
    system is the liter.

12
  • (volume is the amount of space an object takes
    up)
  • The basic unit of length in the metric system is
    the meter.

13
  • The volume of a cube measuring 10 cm on each side
    is one liter.
  • The volume of a cube measuring 1 cm on each side
is one milliliter or 1 cc.

14
  • A cc (cubic centimeter) of water has a mass of 1
    gram.
