George Elgar Hicks (Lymington, Hampshire, 13
March 1824 - Odiham, 4 July 1914) was an English
painter of the Victorian era.He was born to a
wealthy judge and parents dream to become a
doctor, George. George Elgar studied medicine at
University College, but after three years of
study Hicks decided he wanted to be an artist. He
entered the Royal Academy of Arts.In 1847 he
married Hicks Maria Hariss, with whom he had
eight children. First, he has not had much
success as an artist, as was too busy family
life.Only in 1859, his first serious work was a
large canvas "Divident Day at the Bank of
England" in the style of William Powell Frith,
which Hicks exhibited at the Royal Academy. In
the sixties, he will do more of these monumental
works, often commissioned. In 1870 Hicks switched
to portraiture, in romanticized, etheticistische
style with which he had great success in London
society. Prior to 1900, he continued to work in
his studio in London. He has written more
everyday genre scenes, but is known as a
portraitist and a painter of historical genre. In
his paintings there is the influence of the
Pre-Raphaelites. George Elgar Hicks died in 1914
at the age of ninety years.
