GCSE LEVEL PE
  • Lesson 12
  • A healthy active lifestyle and your Respiratory
    system
  • Respiratory System 2
  • Immediate and long term effects of exercise on
    the respiratory system
  • The effects of lifestyle on the respiratory system

2
Connector
  • On average a human takes 21 breaths during rest.
  • How many breaths do you think a professional
    football player would take?
  • Can you explain why?

3
Key Words
  • Carbon monoxide

4
Big Picture
  • You will use the text books, powerpoints and your
prior knowledge to learn about the short-term and
long term effects of exercise on the respiratory
    system.

5
Learning Outcomes
  • All students will be able to identify three
short-term effects of exercise on the respiratory
    system.
  • All students will be able to identify two
long-term effects of regular exercise on the
    respiratory system.
  • Most students will be able to explain the effects
of regular exercise on the respiratory system.
  • All students will be able to identify the effects
of lifestyle on the respiratory system.

6
Immediate and Short Term Effects of Exercise on
the Respiratory System
  • Push the chairs in to make room.
  • Students jog on the spot for several minutes.
  • Can you identify the 3 short term effects of
    exercise on the respiratory system?
  • Breathing becomes faster
  • Breathing becomes deeper
  • Oxygen debt

7
Why do you think athletes in events such as the
400m are gasping for breath when they finish?
  • What do you think oxygen debt means?
  • Michael Johnson http//www.youtube.com/watch?vv2W
    _T77vwfQ
  • Students read through p132.
  • Take notes if needed.

8
Immediate and Long Term Effects of Exercise on
the Respiratory System
  • Students read through page 133 and identify key
    information. Take short notes.
  • Lungs become more efficient.
  • Increased delivery of O2 to working muscles.
  • Body copes better with exercise.
  • CO2 removed more efficiently.
  • Body can cope with increased production of CO2.
  • Vital Capacity is increased.
  • Respiratory system becomes more efficient.
  • More alveoli available for gaseous exchange.
  • More O2 can be absorbed and CO2 removed.
  • VO2 Max is increased.
  • Increased number of capillaries around the
    alveoli.
  • More O2 can get into the blood and to the
    muscles.

9
Effects of Exercise Smoking on the Respiratory
System
  • What do you think will happen to the respiratory
system as a result of smoking?
  • Lung damage tar, carbon monoxide...
  • Alveoli become less efficient
  • Harder to get O2 in and CO2 out.
  • Become short of breath.
  • A smokers heart has to work harder to get O2
    needed.
  • Feel tired.
  • Effects of smoking haemoglobin gas exchange

Review
  • Read the statements and vote with your feet.
  • If the effect of exercise is short term
  • Stand up
  • If the effect of exercise is long term
  • Stand up and jog on the spot
  • You may be asked to explain why

11
Review Statements
  • Increased rate of breathing
  • Increased vital capacity
  • Increased lung volume
  • Oxygen debt
  • Increase depth of breathing
