  • Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia. In 1957
the country was having a civil war. The United
States became involved in it. Many Vietnamese
people fled their country. They went to refugee
camps, or traveled by boats to new places. Many
    families ended up separated.

Nguyen (noo yen) is the main characters family
name. Her given name (first name) is Hoa (hwä),
which means flower. Ut (oot) is her nickname?
meaning youngest daughter. Quang (kwäng) is her
younger brother and her older sister is Chi Hai
(che hi). Vietnamese people value family,
therefore they put their family name (last name)
