Title: Naming Groups in the Table

1
Naming Groups in the Table
  • And a Few Vocabulary Terms

2
Vocabulary Terms
  • Malleable- Metals are malleable, which means they
can be hammered or rolled into sheets like
    aluminum
  • Ductile- Metal that can be drawn into wire like
    copper

3
Terms cont.
  • Metallic Bond- When metals bond with themselves
or with other metals they do so with metallic
    bonds
  • These electrons in metallic bonds move freely.
Movement of electrons gives us ____________?

4
Terms cont.
  • Radioactive- Elements that breakdown easily.
Most of the lower elements in a group are
    radioactive. (Francium and Radon)
  • Transuranium Element- All elements after uranium
    (Atomic 92)
  • Can you name 5 of them?

5
Terms cont.
  • Diatomic molecule- O2, H2, N2 are examples. Two
atoms of the same element together

6
The Groups
  • Alkali Metals
  • Group 1
  • The most reactive
  • 1 electron in its outer shell (1)
  • Most are shiny and good conductors
  • Alkali Earth Metals
  • Group 2
  • Shiny, malleable, reactive
  • 2
  • Used in baseball bats, fireworks, camera flashes

7
More Groups
  • Transition Elements
  • Groups 3-12
  • Most are metals
  • Most are a 1 or 2
  • Less active
  • Form metallic bonds
  • Alloys (mixture of metals)
  • Noble Gases
  • Group 18
  • Very Stable
  • Used in lighting (neon signs)
  • Full valence shell

9
Groups
  • The Halogens
  • Group 17
  • -1 charge
  • Many are gases that form covalent molecules
  • As well many form ionic molecules with metals
    such as salt (NaCl)

10
Mixed Groups
  • Boron Group
  • All elements in group 13
  • Many are metalloids
  • Aluminum is the most abundant metal in earths
    crust
  • The Carbon Group
  • Group 14
  • Made of non-metals, metalloids, and metals like
    tin
  • 4 charge
  • Allotropes- different forms of the same element
    like _____?

11
More Mixed Groups
  • Nitrogen Group
  • Group 15
  • -3 Charge
  • N2 is diatomic and used in fertilizers and
    ammonia
  • Phosphorus also in fertilizers and match heads
  • Oxygen Group
  • Group 16
  • -2 charge
  • O2 we breath
  • O3 is ozone
  • Those are allotropes
  • Sulfur is used in paints

12
Those Bottom Rows
  • Lanthanides
  • Atomic s 58-71
  • They come from period 6
  • Actinides
  • Atomic s 90-103
  • Come from period __?
