THE THREE STATES OFMATTER
  • By
  • Mr. Wise

2
What is matter?
  • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up
    space.

3
What is mass?
  • Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
  • Mass is measured using a balance.

4
Properties of Matter
  • How It Looks (Shiny ,Dull, Color, etc.)
  • How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough , Smooth, etc.)
  • How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell,
    etc.)
  • How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.)
  • What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break,
    Magnetism etc.)

5
SOLIDS
6
SOLID
  • A solid is matter that has that has definite
    size, volume, and shape.
  • Particles packed tightly together.
  • Example Put a sneaker in a box. It stays the
    same.

7
Liquids
8
LIQUID
  • A liquid takes the shape of any container.
  • Particles are loosely packed.
  • Example Pour juice into a glass. The juice
will take on the shape of the glass.

9
GAS
10
Gas
  • Gas is matter that has no definite shape. Gases
take the shape of whatever container they are in.
  • Gas particles are far apart.
  • Example The oxygen all around us is a gas.

11
Physical changes in matter
  • A Physical change is a change in how matter
looks, but not the kind of matter it is.
  • Tear
  • Cut
  • Folded
  • Written
  • Liquid
  • Solid
  • Gas
  • Mixture
  • Solution

12
PHYSICAL CHANGES
13
Phase Changes of Water
ICE WATER STEAM
melting freezing
evaporating condensing
(solid) (liquid) (gas)
14
Chemical changes in matter
  • Any change that causes new matter to be
    formed.
  • Burning
  • Rusting
  • Cooking
  • Film processing
