Title: The Explosion Between Mentos and Baking Soda

1
The Explosion Between Mentos and Baking Soda
  • Jennifer Z., Sally G., Tiffany T.

2
Question
  • What is the measure of pressure after we put
Mentos and Baking Soda in Pepsi and Coca-Cola?

3
Introduction
  • Purpose To find out what will happen when we put
mentos in the Pepsi and Coca-Cola.
To find out what will happen when
we put baking soda in the Pepsi and the
    Coca-Cola.

4
Hypothesis
  • We think that when we put the Mentos in the soda
it will have more pressure than when we put the
    Baking Soda in the soda.

5
Materials List
  • 6 balloons
  • Measuring Cups
  • 6 bottles of Coca Cola
  • 6 bottles of Pepsi
  • 3 packs of Mentos
  • Baking Soda
  • String of yarn
  • Meter Stick

6
Experimental Procedure
  • Preparing the Lab for Mentos Trial
  • Place the garbage bags on the floor.
  • Put the soda (Pepsi or Coca Cola) on top of the
    garbage bag
  • Take out seven Mentos and put it in the soda all
    at once
  • After the explosion of the soda messure the
pressure of the Mentos by measuring how much soda
is left with the measuring cup
  • Clean up Mess!

7
Experimental Procedure (cont.)
  • Preparing the Lab for Baking Soda Trials
  • Fill the balloon up with 2 tablespoons of Arms
    and Hammers Baking Soda
  • Place the balloon on top of the soda bottle
    (Pepsi or Coca Cola)
  • Hold the balloon and pour the baking soda
  • When the balloon stops to fill up with carbon
dioxide or soda, measure the diameter by using
    the string
  • When finish measuring the diameter of the
    balloon, write it down
  • Clean up Mess

8
Our Set Up
  • Baking Soda

  • Mentos

9
Experimental Parameters
  • Independent Variable
  • -the amount of soda released from the bottle
  • Dependent Variable
  • -the Mentos and Baking Soda
  • Constants
  • -the amount of Mentos and the amount of Baking
    Soda

10
Results
  • Trials

Types of Soda Mentos (how much soda is remaining in the bottle) Baking Soda (the diameter of the balloon)
Pepsi 25 oz. 59 cm.
Pepsi 28 oz. 60 cm.
Pepsi 25 oz. 65 cm.
Coca-Cola 24.5 oz. 55 cm.
Coca-Cola 25 oz. 59 cm.
Coca-Cola 26 oz. 60 cm.

11
Conclusion
  • The data we collected does support that the Pepsi
has more pressure when we put the baking soda and
    the Mentos in it.
  • AVERAGE

Type of Soda Mentos Baking Soda
Pepsi 26 oz. 61.33 oz.
Coca-Cola About 25.17 oz 58 oz.
12
Conclusion Science Content
  • We found out that the Pepsi had more pressure
than the Coca-Cola after we put the Baking Soda
    in both sodas.
  • We also found out that the Pepsi also had more
pressure than the Coca-Cola after we put the
    Mentos in both sodas.

13
Sources of Error
  • We used the wrong amount of soda human error
  • Not all the liquid was poured out of the soda
when measuring the pressure after the Mentos
    experiment human error

14
Further Questions to Investigate
  • What is in the baking soda that makes the soda's
    explode?
  • What is in matte finish that makes the explosion?
