Cigarette Smoking

  • BY MIRANDA BURGESS

Definition
  • Smoking, in simple words, means drawing and
exhaling smoke from a cigarette, cigar, or pipe.
Tobacco smoke contains a stimulant, 'nicotine'
which is as highly an addictive drug as heroin or
cocaine. In the long run, nicotine forms a strong
physical and psychological dependence on it.
Dependence is strongest when tobacco smoke is
inhaled into the lungs and with time it increases
the speed and quantity of nicotine absorption.

HISTORY
  • Different forms of smoking, apart
  • from the usual one (Cigarettes) are
  • smoking bidis
  • hookahs
  • clove cigarettes
  • chewing tobacco
  • But these different forms of
  • smoking carry the same risk as
  • cigarettes, cigars or pipes.

4
Quick Facts
  • Is nicotine that highly addictive? The answer is
'yes'. Why? When taken in small amounts nicotine
creates a pleasant feeling which makes the smoker
want to smoke more. Moreover, when a smoker tries
to quit, he suffers from physical withdrawal
symptoms such as nervousness, headaches and
trouble sleeping. It also affects the chemistry
of the brain and central nervous system.
Ultimately the smoker finds it hard to quit.
  • Medical research has proven that smoking is a
major contributing factor towards many human
health problems such as cancer, emphysema,
    cardiovascular disease and other disorders.

5
Pros of Smoking Cigarettes

  • The feeling of creating a ritual.

Analysis of Photograph
  • This photograph is talking about the raise in tax
    on cigarettes.
  • Its referring to people saying they need a
cigarette, instead the cigarettes are saying they
could really kill someone right now because they
are not being purchased as much as they were
    before the tax raise.
  • The author is using irony in his cartoon, using
the cigarettes as a center focus on the tax
    raise.

Analysis of Photograph
  • The photograph is showing concern for cancer.
  • The meaning behind the cartoon is showing that
many have to deal with breast cancer because
they have to not because they could have
prevented it. The cigarette that is twisted into
the breast cancer symbol is expressing people who
smoke are giving themselves cancer by smoking
they have a choice to stop smoking and prevent
    the cancer.

Analysis of Photograph
  • This cartoon is showing the addiction that comes
    with smoking cigarettes.
  • In the cartoon it shows a man holding a pack of
cigarettes and at the bottom of the cartoon it
says till death do we apart. This quote from
the cartoon is also used during marriage
ceremonies because the two individuals are
saying they will dedicated their lives to one
another. They will be a couple forever.. until
death do us part. This is referring to his
addiction and how he is going to smoke for the
    rest of his life.

ARTICLE
  • Aug. 21, 2009 -- Cigarette smoking not only
causes cancer and cardiovascular disease, it also
dulls taste, making food less palatable, a new
study suggests. Scientists in Greece enlisted 62
young men of the countrys military forces, about
half of whom were smokers, to test for taste
sensitivity and to measure the number and shape
of taste buds. The average age of the men was
25.The taste buds on smokers tongues were found
to be flatter than the buds on the tongues of the
nonsmokers, the researchers say. There was no
difference in the numbers of taste buds between
    the two groups.Statistically important
differences between the taste thresholds of
smokers and nonsmokers were detected, Pavlidis
Pavlos, leader of a team of researchers from the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, says in a
news release. However, a few of the smokers
perceived taste similarly to nonsmokers, and
researchers say more study is needed to explain
why. Smoking can affect the shape of taste buds
and also affect vascularization, or the formation
of blood vessels, he says.Nicotine may cause
    functional and morphological alterations of
taste buds "without severely affecting their
number," Pavlos and colleagues write.Smoking is
an important factor which can lead to decreased
    taste sensitivity, the authors conclude.

  • The article also gives statistics about your
taste buds and how eventually it could ruin your
    taste buds.
