Title: Writing Mentors

1
Writing Mentors
  • A writer is someone who can make a riddle out of
    an answer.  Karl Kraus

2
First, Check out the flyers!
  • Look at the subjects they write about!
  • On the back of the flyers there are snippets of
their writing, see what you think? Like it? Write
    the name down!
  • Try to see as many flyers as you can!
  • Aim to have at least five names written down!

3
So, what will we do with these?
  • You will find at least three pieces by your
    writer.
  • Each major pattern of development that we explore
you will analyze your writer and how he/she
reflects or doesnt reflect that type of writing!
  • Choose someone who interests you! You will be
reading and analyzing his/her writing quite a bit!

Remember, you are NOT limited to these writers!
7
So, I have my writing mentor, now what? You will
want to find three essays or pieces of writing by
your writer.  What you choose for your selections
will depend on the type of writing your writer
completes.   Does your author write books like
Elie Wiesel? Choose three different chapters and
take the first six pages of each of the chapters.
(If you are copying from a book I consider both
pages that you see when you open the book 1 page!
If that doesn't make sense, just ask) Does your
author write columns like Stephen King does for
Entertainment Weekly? Choose three different
columns written by your writer.

  • A few things to keep in mind . . .
  • You must photo copy your articles or whatever
pieces of writing you have. You cannot bring in
the original book or magazine.  You will need to
be able to annotate the writing.
  • Remember that the writing needs to be
appropriate, in most instances you will not be
the only one reading your selection.   You can
always "sharpie" out the bad words if there are
    just a few.
  • Plan ahead! You cannot always find examples of
your author's work online! You may need to go to
    the library!
  • Your examples of writing that you bring in MUST
be nonfiction. Many of the available writers
dabble in fiction and nonfiction - we are ONLY
    working with nonfiction.
  • Remember that you need enough writing to work
with for the essays and selections that you bring
in!  A paragraph or two is not enough.  If you
are unsure if you have enough writing - just ask!
