Title: ABQG Design Evolution

ABQGDesign Evolution

2
Presentation Overview
  • Define the Problem
  • Original Design
  • Design Changes
  • Design Solution
  • Restatement of Goals
  • Current Operational Design

3
Define the Problem
  • Determine Objectives
  • We need to provide service to NLR from UNM
  • NLR service is 10G Packetnet (routed), 1G
    Packetnet (routed backup), 1G Framenet
  • UNM requires reliable redundant service
  • Solution should provide scalable services to make
the best use of acquired fiber

4
Rationale for original design
  • We had three known locations ITS, 505, and 104.
  • We had limited access to fiber due to Comcast
build limitations and cost (2 pair)
  • DWDM made sense over trunking 10G connections
    only
  • We had no fiber characteristics for determining
    protected cards for DWDM

5
The Original Design
6
Design Changes
  • There was an increase to 4 node ring to include
    South Campus
  • For GSD partnership
  • For CABQ partnership
  • For UNM commercial partners
  • As a location for a redundant path
  • A node was moved to 256 to support North Campus
  • We were told not to deliver 10G directly to UNM
    campus

Design Solution
  • Make use of fiber already ordered
  • Use DWDM to do this
  • Provide Redundant ABQG service to Campus using
    both fiber directions
  • Provide Redundant NLR service to 505 using both
    fiber directions
  • Buy hardware for current needs, future projects
    will purchase ports they need.

12
Customer connection options
  • We are planning these services
  • Ciena---protected
  • A path is provisioned both directions around the
ring. Initially with 2 ports GigE or 10GigE
  • Ciena---Non-protected
  • A point to point path on the metro network is
    provisioned
  • Cisco options
  • We can place a switch with a 10G backhaul to 505,
    and share that bandwidth

13
ABQ-G future
  • Wait and see, and dont install anything else?
  • Install to satisfy current and expected design
    criteria

14

Here is what ABQ-G can provide
  • 1 Gbps
  • 10Gbps
  • FrameNet
  • PackeNet
  • WaveNet
  • Lambda
  • protected
  • non-protected
  • partially protected
  • Virtually anything you can think of, we
have positioned ourselves as able to provide it.

Further Questions or Comments?
  • Any future functional requirements we should know
    of?
  • Any current ones we may have missed?
