Title: Skies

1
Skies
Photo taken exactly the 9th of April at 1456 TU
after the March equinox, being the first Full
Moon of spring in the northern hemisphere and the
first of autumn in the southern one.
2
Annular eclipse the fire ring
An annular eclipse takes place when the Moon is
in the farest part of its elliptical orbit around
the Earth. The next annular Sun eclipse will be
in June of 2010. The image corresponds to a
spectacular annular eclipse, that was
photographed behind a palm tree in January of
1992.
3
A lenticular cloud over New Zealand
Some clouds are piled in an awesome lenticular
cloud. The dry air in the upper part of an
oscillation might be quite stratified in humity
content, so it forms clouds in every layer where
the air saturates with the humidity.
4
Unusual pillars of light over Letonia
A thorough inspection shows us these strange
columns of light above the bright lights, that in
fact involves ice crystals falling and reflecting
back those lights. The reason why these pillars
appear, is nowadays unknown.
5
Lunar mirage on the coast
This surprising sight of the Full Moon rising the
7th of the June was captured with a teleobjective
from a balcony near Nice, France. The distorted
appearence of the Moon is due to the unusual
bright rays curvature (refraction), creating
multiple images or mirages, similar to the
mirages in the rise and set of the Sun.
6
The Milky Way over the Devil Tower
On top, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy
creates an arc in the sky. Many celestial objects
are visible, including dark filaments of the Pipa
nebula and the reddish Laguna Nebula on the right
of the tower.
7
Eclipse over Chongqing, China
The diurnal sky turns dark, temperatures
decrease, and lights reappear in Chongqing,
China. The sky enters in the lunar shadow during
the total solar eclipse of the 22nd of July.
8
Noctilucent clouds storm
Noctilucent clouds or bright nocturnal clouds
stay near the spatial edge. At a 80 km distance
above the terrestrial surface, these frost clouds
can still reflect the Sun light although it is
below the horizon. Normally this phenomena occur
at high latitudes on summer months.
9
Pyrenean paraselene
A sea of clouds lick the summits of the french
pyrenees mountains, in this picture taken from
the Pic du Midi Observatory . The realization
date of the photo was the 4th of june.
10
Moon rays over Thurso Castle
While he was waiting the Moon to rise the 18th of
May 2009 in Thurso, Scotland, the amateur
astrophotographer Stewart Watt took this
exhibition of three minutes of stellar
background.
11
Iridiscent cloud over Ohio
A relatively strange phenomena called iridiscent
clouds can show live and unusuals colours or a
complete spectrum of colours simultaneusly. These
clouds are formed by little water drops of a
nearly uniform size.
12
Lirida meteor
The 22nd of April, the meteor rain of Liridas
visited the planet Earth. An annual rain produced
when the Earth passes through te dust generated
by the Thatcher comet tail.
13
Morning Glory clouds over Australia
A strange type of cloud known as Morning Glory
cloud can extend 1 000 kilometers of longitude
and occur at altitudes up to 2 km.
14
A triple sunrise over the Gdansk Bay
The Friday 10th of July 2009, a spectacular
triple sunrise was photographed around 430am in
the Gdansk Bay, Poland. Obviously, our Sun rises
only once. It is a solar mirage.
15
The Discovery rainbow
The Friday 28th of august, just a minute before
the midnight EDT, the Space Shuttle Discovery
started a large arc in the interior of a cloudy
sky. Following the launch, a bright and colourful
wake was captured in this photo from the Banana
River gazebo, looking to the east towards the 39
A platform of the Kennedy Spatial Center.
16
Equinoctial sunset
This image of a beautiful and unusual twilight
was taken in a special day, the 22nd of september
equinox. Marking the astronomical change of the
seasons, that day the citizens of the Earth
experienced almost 12 light hours and 12 dark
hours. Reflected in the quiet water of the
Balaton Lake with the silhouette of a motionless
sailboat, the Sun sets just at the west and goes
to the south through the celestial equator.
17
Have you ever seen a solar column? If the
atmosphere is in a temperature low enough during
the dawn or during the sunset, the crystals of
ice suspended on the air can reflect the solar
light and create an unusual light column.
