What is Fan Fiction?

• Fan fiction is a way for fiction fans to tell
  their own stories of other people's characters
  so you can write the next chapter for, say, Harry
  Potter, even though creator J.K. Rowling
  officially ended the series years ago.

Your Fan-Fiction Mission

• Today you will write your own story about your
  favorite character(s)in your novel.  You can
  explore "what if...?" questions.  "What adventure
  would they have?"  For instance, "What if
  Harry's parents were still alive at the beginning
  of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone? How
  would the story change?"  Using your imagination,
  you get to decide the outcome.

Brainstorm

• Do you want to create a scene that happens before
  your story starts? In the middle of your story?
  Or after your story ends?(jot ideas of scenes you
  could write)
• Pick one scene. What will the characters be
  doing? What will the characters say? Will you
  tell the scene from a different characters
  perspective? (jot down ideas)
• Make sure your scene fits in with what you know
  of characters, setting, and themes.
• What craft techniques will you use in your fan
  fiction chapter (dialogue? Revealing action?
  Description?)

TIP 1 Dialogue

• Look for your favorite words or phrases that
  characters use and REPEAT.
• Try to capture the unique rhythms and patterns of
  a characters speech.

TIP 3 Same story, different perspectives.

• Try including other characters perspectives.
• Think about this like in a reality show or Modern
  Family when the director cuts away to get the
  thoughts of different characters on the same
  scene. How could you do that in your writing?

Ways that Writers Can Show How
Characters Have Different Perspectives

• Create a dialogue that shows a conflict between a
  characters wants or feelings
• Create a dialogue that does not match what a
  character is truly feeling, but instead what he
  thinks someone else wants to hear.
• Describe facial or body reactions to show
  tension.
• Describe how a characters voice may reveal that
  she is not saying exactly what she thinks.
• Show how the setting is affecting different
  characters differently.
• Include extended inner thinking (a kind of
  monologue on the page) from a character in the
  first person to show that characters real
  feelings.
• Use space symbolically to show how some
  characters are close, and others are far apart-
  in space and also in point of view.
